OOOPS.

I MAY have a problem.

Remember the tetris eggs that got bleach steamed?

I ended up setting 63 eggs.

Tilted the incubator using Ken Follet's Pillars of the Earth (big enough book?) 3 or 4 x a day.

Was planning to take out the duds as several of these are fertility checks. Last time I took out 20 eggs so figured this time would be that way too.

Guess how many duds.

3
yup. 3 whole duds. Now what? Do I keep just tilting the incubator? I have 5 that need double checked in a week because they look iffy. Might be blood rings in 2 of them but they are darker and hard to see in.

Tips on this? Kind of a funny chicken math problem!

If a girl sets 5 dozen eggs in the incubator and there is only room for 2 dozen, how many chicks will hatch? 83. 83 chicks will hatch! Is that the right answer? Should I show my work? I'm pretty sure that's how chicken math works :)
That is an interesting problem. I always count on clears too when I stack. They'll be fine left stacked. Or you could put them in egg cartons and tip the bator.

Sorry, one more question.
Day 9 we will be gone all night and day. My Dad is bringing my son over in the AM to tilt the bator. it will only get tilted a new direction 1x in 24hrs. Should I be sending the bator over to a friends house for bator sitting?
We had planned to be using the turner by now.
They'll be fine.

Oh boy! A friend just brought me over 7 eggs to incubate for her! I'm planning to put the date on them and add them to the Brinsea tomorrow. I have never done a staggered hatch before. ANything I should know?

Oh...and I got thru to Brinsea yesterday and ordered the foam pads. The one for the bottome is separate from the ones for the dividers. $11.99 for the floor and $5.99 for the dividers..... plus a small bottle of the incubator disinfectant....plus shipping. $35.00 all together, but will be worth it. I have a wash cloth in there now holding one of the rows of eggs in place...

Woot! Just make sure they are clearly marked so you know which eggs to move for hatching. Or are you hatching in the same bator?

Here's a couple from my hatch. They were here and now in new homes. Didn't have the best hatch, but think it was due to my rooster in every 3-4 days. He was being too rough. I thought that was enough time. I got 10 out of 15 or 16 eggs. 1 was an early quitter, the other were clear

And Darn that Brinsea for making EVERYTHING that bright yellow and black!! They make it impossible for new products to blend into surroundings and my husband notices everything new! Got the brooder. Love it, but man I can't get anymore of their stuff anytime soon. Too much explaining to do to DH
Adorable! With the DH, it's easier to ask forgiveness than permission, especially in anything chicken related.

Whats hatching?
so far 2 empordanesa and a male / female Crele Penedesenca see a few more pips but many with no action. I did not candle this time as I can not find my candler
but it looks like the silver ameraucana / crele eggs are clear again. the rooster is doing his job and one of the crele hens that was with hims egg hatched.
I think the lower fertility I have in the winter along with humidity that wouldn't stabilize in the Genesis here may of have something to do with it. Its up at 63% now
hopefully more will hatch today and tonight

That is good news! It is always nice to have some hatch--The pipped eggs should all hatch and hopefully more too!

Today I get to do the 7 day candling on 50plus eggs.

I know. I am happy that some Empordanesa hatched.. I was hoping a few of the blacks would hatch . last night at 9pm was only day 21. My main fear is even opening the incubator . The R-com recovers so quick but the Genesis takes so much longer

Exciting!!!!!! I have 50 eggs at day 5 and I'm looking forward to candling them! I'm trying to decide if I want to set another group of eggs from my backyard or wait to see what these mixes look like. I have a group of CL/CL mix pullets that follow Zoro around like groupies. 4 of their blue eggs hatched in this last hatch along with 3 brown eggs. I should have separated them at hatch because all 7 chicks look alike. They look like Pita Pintas but with more black on them. I'm hoping that the CL/PP mixes will lay a green egg.

Just hatch a bunch and sell them. Keep the cash and transfer it to $1 bills. When you have enough to make a big stack, show him how the investment paid off :) Meanwhile, keep as many chicks as possible! What are these? They are cute with the feathered legs!

I just had one chick hatch on day 22. All the rest hatched on days 19 and 20. I'm thrilled that it is a black Langshan chick from my new trio! So my last hatch ended up with 20 chicks, 1 dead after partially zipping, and 2 with no action. I unplugged the incubator today at day 24 and I'll eggtopsy the last 2. I hope that this next hatch goes as well!

Thank you PetRock. Those two in the pic are Black Copper and Splash Marans. Had all 3 colors with this group. A couple Lav AM/ Marans crosses too. Those ones looked to be black, but from an earlier post I learned Blue was also a possibility. They had the markings just like the black marans here, but with muffs and the AM comb.

Don't ever hatch your Marans with Langshans because the chicks look almost identical! Here is a pic of Langshan chicks to show you how much they look like your chicks.

black Langshans

blue Langshans

white and splash Langshans
