Just hatch a bunch and sell them. Keep the cash and transfer it to $1 bills. When you have enough to make a big stack, show him how the investment paid off :) Meanwhile, keep as many chicks as possible! What are these? They are cute with the feathered legs!
That's a great idea! The $1's will make it look like I'm getting rich off this thing, haha. That would be a great persuader. These are BBS Marans. There were some Marans/AM crosses with leg feathers too. So cute.

Don't ever hatch your Marans with Langshans because the chicks look almost identical! Here is a pic of Langshan chicks to show you how much they look like your chicks.

Oh wow, those are adorable! I wouldn't be able to tell them apart. I wanted to do cute pics with the background like you have here. But got so busy. Then when they're a few days old, the little boogers run around ALOT more. Makes it hard

I'm with you on the hoping DH doesn't notice. If I can hide things long enough then I can honestly say.."Oh...I bought that a long time ago....". I think he notices more that I give him credit for though. He is just smart enough to let it go.

Haha, I guess great minds think alike! It makes it hard with this Brinsea stuff being so bright though. There's no way of hiding it. I may have to contact their customer service to make a suggestion

That sounds adorable! It would be so hard to part with them!
It actually was. this is the first I've used an incubator in maybe 12 years. And they were so friendly. But they went to homes that will appreciate the friendliness of them.

my gosh you people have been chatty lately -- it took me ages to catch up with this thread!

question about doing staggered hatches -- the eggs in my incubator right now are on day 11 -- if i added a few more & tried a staggered hatch, when the second bunch hatched, would they be too small to go into the same brooder as the older ones? i only have one Ecoglow, and so am concerned it would nee to be at different heights for the two age groups, or that the bigger ones (11 days older) would boss the teeny ones around too much?

It really all depend on the breeds. Some ill adopt the little ones and act like their mother. The Australorps did this with the two Penedesencas and they were two weeks old. I used an eco glow for them.

The Primier is a bit cheaper so you may want to order one of them so that you can have two. I am considering getting the big one. I may have to use my heat light for the next hatch--or two brooders and eco glows. I am going to have a huge hatch!

Mine is in the "Computer/Bird room. He doesn't venture in there often, but did this morning. He set something on the floor....right in front of the box so I'm pretty sure he saw it. He didn't say a word.....

Knowing the chicks are going to good homes makes it easier to part with them....but it's still hard... :(

Has anyone tried "Durvet Strike III" poultry wormer? It kills 3 types of worms...Large Roundworms, Cecal worms and Capillary worms. You mix it with feed and it says there is no egg withholding time....just 3 days withholding for meat.

Ron, I was thinking about buying the large Premier until I looked at the size. It measures 16 in x 24 in. That's a lot of brooder space! It would take up more than half of the space in my largest brooder. I am thinking about buying 2 of the small ones instead although that would mean less space so fewer chicks and probably higher energy use.

My Wyandotte that is broody right now raised 2 clutches at the same time that were close to 2 weeks apart in age. I did give her the younger ones at night when they were a couple of days old. By then they were a bit more steady on their feet. They were also in a broody coop so she could not run off and leave them. She did great with all of them.

It looks promising!

11 days is fine if they have enough space. You can adjust the legs on the Ecoglow so one side is lower than the other.
