So value your input. Makes me sleep better as I don't have to worry so much

Not to say they'll all hatch. However, even a 50% hatch rate is 30 chicks. That's a lot in my book!

Here's a couple from my hatch. They were here and now in new homes. Didn't have the best hatch, but think it was due to my rooster in every 3-4 days. He was being too rough. I thought that was enough time. I got 10 out of 15 or 16 eggs. 1 was an early quitter, the other were clear

And Darn that Brinsea for making EVERYTHING that bright yellow and black!! They make it impossible for new products to blend into surroundings and my husband notices everything new! Got the brooder. Love it, but man I can't get anymore of their stuff anytime soon. Too much explaining to do to DH

I'm with you on the hoping DH doesn't notice. If I can hide things long enough then I can honestly say.."Oh...I bought that a long time ago....". I think he notices more that I give him credit for though. He is just smart enough to let it go.

it won't be a ssue. they stay away from the green parts for the most part. Now they will scratch around the roots so have the plants caged or you can also get some of those mulch matts that lay on the ground with a hole for the trunk. That will keep the roots and crown safe

Oh! I always cage them...but I had not thought about the MATS they would work for other plants in chicken territory! Thank you!

Don't ever hatch your Marans with Langshans because the chicks look almost identical! Here is a pic of Langshan chicks to show you how much they look like your chicks.

black Langshans

blue Langshans

white and splash Langshans
They look so good!

my gosh you people have been chatty lately -- it took me ages to catch up with this thread!

question about doing staggered hatches -- the eggs in my incubator right now are on day 11 -- if i added a few more & tried a staggered hatch, when the second bunch hatched, would they be too small to go into the same brooder as the older ones? i only have one Ecoglow, and so am concerned it would nee to be at different heights for the two age groups, or that the bigger ones (11 days older) would boss the teeny ones around too much?

also, i am planning on taking three 9-week-olds to the feed store today, unless someone is interested in taking them -- their mom is an isbar/marans cross, dad is birchen marans, and i'm not totally certain of gender, but thinking its likely to be one pullet and two cockerels. they were raised by a broody mom so are a bit skittish.

Oh boy! A friend just brought me over 7 eggs to incubate for her! I'm planning to put the date on them and add them to the Brinsea tomorrow. I have never done a staggered hatch before. ANything I should know?

Oh...and I got thru to Brinsea yesterday and ordered the foam pads. The one for the bottome is separate from the ones for the dividers. $11.99 for the floor and $5.99 for the dividers..... plus a small bottle of the incubator disinfectant....plus shipping. $35.00 all together, but will be worth it. I have a wash cloth in there now holding one of the rows of eggs in place...

Woot! Just make sure they are clearly marked so you know which eggs to move for hatching. Or are you hatching in the same bator?

I will be hatching in the Farm innovator as long as it seems to maintain the temp/humidity. I think it will require more monitoring, but was doing pretty well. Of course the eggs under the broody are due to hatch just in time for rain. Hope that doesn't have any adverse effects.
