well... I throw mine in with chicken eggs at about 55% but it drops to 18% by the end of the next day and I put more water in. Then it shoots back up. But I check the water trays i don;t get it. After the chicks are out I go up to 65% for the ducks and they seem to do fine.

Yet those numbers seem rediculous. I followed the bator instructions.

I have had the same experience with Ducks and turkeys. I incubated them with chicken eggs and did not change a thing. They hatched fine. I think the problems with them are from shipping. The ones I have hatched were local and not shipped.

I'm just getting ready to do some serious downsizing and could put together a nice little mixed (or one breed) flock for you. I'm in the Placerville area.

And for those of you that know me well....................yes, there are 24 eggs due to hatch next week (DH set those while I was gone) and more importantly........................................

EGGS WERE PUT IN THE MAIL TO ME THIS MORNING, LOL

of course!!!

iv'e got a broody SPPR who keeps getting confused as to which nest is hers -- so the eggs i started her on have gotten cold a couple of times now. they are marans, so difficult for me to candle effectively -- so if they don't hatch, but the lone remaining egg in my incubator DOES, i'm hoping i can just give her the lone chick.

and then i think i might give the incubator a rest for a little while -- it's been on continuously since january...

Deb did you ship any today?
I shipped 2 dozen today and someone else was there before me to ship eggs the lady said. I could see the box

So today I had my favorite hen, Carolina, out in the garden with me while I was gardening, and was curious as to what would happen if I introduced her to one of the chicks. I took out one of the oldest of the 4 and brought it out and set it in front of Carolina. It's about 3? weeks old. I had my hand between them so that if she did try to peck, I could push her away and she wouldn't be able to injure the baby. However, she didn't try to hurt him even once. She was just really curious, she stuck her face a couple inches from the chick and just stared at him for quite a bit, while he tried to eat a dead leaf on the ground, then eventually she went back to her scratching around in the garden. My dog wasn't happy about Carolina getting so close to HER chicks(my Nelly is very protective of "her" chicks) and was baring her teeth at Carolina! Lol!

Regarding the use of wormers during breeding season... I have seen a couple of references in books about *not* using fenbendazole (Safeguard) during breeding or molting. Both have references to Marshall, 1993. I also looked at some of the other wormers that we use in poultry (albendazole, piperazine, ivermectin, praziquantil, pyrantal pamoate), but none of those had warnings about using during breeding or molt.

Ew yucky stuff.

Food grade DE fed daily= no worms and no risks of defect. It's actually manufactured into my chicken feed (which I love and makes it so easy!) and I have had no problems so far. But when ordering hatching eggs.. you can't control that :/ I just buy chicks if I need to avoid the loss and concern but yes it can be pricey. Plus I breed my own. *sigh*
