My red decided the broody Orpington's nest box was the one and only suitable nest box, and the Orpington decided today was the day she would stop sharing. The ensuing scuffle broke one of the developing eggs.   Not the best chicken week for me.

*knock on wood* this is supposed to be the only triple digit day for my birds this week, only upper 90s the rest of it.

It's really hot here...109 in the shade. Haven't checked the chickens, but they were ok at 103 Fahrenheit earlier today when I turned the misters on.

My dogs were miserable even in our cooler garage ( they like the cooler concrete floor). So, I brought them inside. They are loving it even though we don't have AC until 7 PM due to conserving power. It's a cool 85 inside right now. I think we will go jump in the pool soon.

Ron, to answer your questions, there were no feral chickens where we were staying. I wish there were! But we didn't see any. I did get some pretty cool pictures of other things, though!

It is very hot here too!

The chickens are fine so far.

Thank you everyone. Unfortunately, the chick was dead when I got home a few minutes ago.

I think the 115 F degree temps are getting to the girls

I take it you mean the tiny eggs... So far mine have not had any changes in laying sue to the heat. Those little ones look about the size of quail eggs.

Now in this photo there are 3 goslings and 1 duckling and the geese take care of all of them as a gaggle all watch over them as one and just make sure the baby's eat first and keep them safe just funny to watch them .... So with 7 adult geese watching 3 goslings I think the adults should be able to handle them and there is no fighting other them keeping the other birds away ......
That must be a great sight to see!

I finally got my quail cages finished (mostly) and moved the birds from the brooder to the cages today. I discovered my rooster to hen ratio is way off for the Pharoahs and A&Ms.

I had 4 pharoahs and 3 of them are roos

.

Of the 3 A&Ms at least 2 are roos. I'm not sure of the sex on the 3rd one. It is the one that was scalped. It has not crowed or laid any eggs, but I'm thinking that may be becasue of the wounds. I hope it is a hen

.

Of the Goldens, I have 2 roos and 4 hens, but one of the roos is the one that has a slipped hock and will go to the freezer. I have 5 tuxedos, but so far only 1 has revealed himself.

I have 4 all together that have been scalped to some degree. 3 of them I didn't even notice until I moved them. The wounds blended into the head coloring. Those are now separated. @chiqita do you know if they will leave each other alone if they are all roos together with no hens?

My first guess is they are bashing their heads put a soft top on your levels. Then let Them heal and try boy sets. Sometimes they still freak hut worth a try.

They haven't hit their heads....I noticed the head wounds when I picked them up out of the brooder (it is about 2 feet deep) so they were already there before I moved them into the cages. They are pretty agressive. I went out to check on them just now and saw that the scalped A&M was chasing the other one I had seen crowing earlier around. I moved it down to the pen the tuxes are in and it promptly jumped the rooster in that pen! I moved the A&M inside too. So now it looks like all 3 of the A&Ms are roosters. One of the 2 that hatched a few days ago is an A&M so maybe it will be a hen..
(edited to correct my stupid spelling)
