And Gary. Poor guy hangs out as close to the flock as Foghorn will let him (bantam rooster who is in charge) and scratches and coos trying super hard to get Betty to rejoin him. So far it's rejection city for Gary.

Pecking order is funny to watch work out in the flock. One of my Old style RIR Hens is starting to hang out with the older Hens now. She used to stay with her three sisters but she is starting to assert herself now.

Gary is still young, so he still has a chance to woo Betty away from Foghorn.

According to Wikipedia (to be PC) it is classified as a raptor. People call it a fish hawk or a fish eagle. They eat mainly fish. I've seen them dive into the water feet first and grab a fish before it was awesome!

We watch the Osprey at the ocean all the time. If you watch they always catch the fish with the head pointing forward as they fly ( we live about a half mile from the ocean and spend a LOT of time there lol!) They are soo beautiful! I dont worry so much about them here but we have Red Shouldered and Red Tailed hawks as well.

Wow that would be really cool to see them getting fish out of the ocean! I've just seen them taking fish out of lakes/ponds. I have Red Tailed hawks very close to my house but I haven't had any losses whew.

After watching a Red Tail go after a full sized hen of my neighbors and not be able to be scared off I decided I wouldnt be able to deal with losing my birds to them. Having Silkies that are already at a disadvantage because of big crests makes it pretty dangerous for them. They dont even see them coming to try and take cover.

Yes, the Osprey are amazing to watch. They seem to be nesting near our marina so we see them catch fish and fly off to their nesting places. Actually I love the hawks... just dont want them to have my chickens for a snack By the way.. I have had Ravens kill juvenile chickens as well. They would fly into my barn when it was open where I used to live and killed several young Brahmas.

I think that the Marans were not recognized by the APA until 2011. So they are not in the latest, 2010, edition. If you want an SOP with Marans, you need to buy the next printing.

Correct. I have the 2010 version and Marans are not in mine.

THe SOP is far more than just the marans SOP. THe basics are there, and from what I understand loads of pictures to help with understanding . It is only revamped every 10 years, so the SOp for the marans is currently online, BUT it will be printed as an insert for inclusion at the back of the book along with several other birds recently accepted. The book is well worth buying if you want to be a serious student of breeding chickens. I have it on my Christmas list.

Send Walt(Fowlman01) a PM and see when the insert will be included in the Book. It should be soon!
