I hail from San Mateo. Where is a good store to purchase chickens for laying eggs and when would you suggest making the purchase?

Closest feed store with chicks is down in Half Moon Bay. There are a lot of breeders that have specific types all around here though. What are you looking for?

hello!

In the spring, our local feedstores have chicks. Most of what we get around here are easter eggers and Buff orphingtons. I'm in San Jose and have chicks avaible now, some are older and sexed and some are younger and unknown. I will have TJ's leghorns after New years, they are supposed to be good layers and I will have a lot.

Other then that, look on CL and the chick farm in Gilroy. Be careful about the ones from Gilroy, however, they are prone to sickness. Of course the younger the bird you get, the more likely it is to get sick, young chicks are pretty fragile.

Welcome to teh thread! there is a lot going on around here.

This is a great time to get chicks from someone here! They will be laying eggs when the ones from the feed stores are being sold.

Let us know what you want and someone her will help you get them.

Zooweemama: Good job on selling some Duck eggs! I saw some for sale on the Sac Craiglist for $9.00 per dozen! I had to turn on the lights. Store eggs are gross!

OR4hmom: Not turning on the lights makes sense too! Last year I turned on the lights on Nov1. This year I waited until closer to December and only for the layers. I almost did not turn them on but that one egg a day was not going to work for me. Also, my co worker almost cried when I told her I might not have eggs to sell her.

. Here in Woodland/Davis, I could sell every egg they lay and would not have enough.
She's a first timer to duck eggs. Hope she likes them! I'm not ready to CL my extras yet but not all my friends appreciate high quality eggs and their cost. IN Redding people CL eggs for eating for $2/dozen. For the life of me I am not sure how people can do that. I would rather feed them back to the birds.

I would like to have a egg laying pen and use lights for them if I don't get enough duck eggs - at least for us to eat. I am curious how year #2 will be with the ducks.

Got some pictures this morning.

My Cream Legbar pullet:

Lavender Ameraucana - she is 28 weeks and still looks nowhere close to laying. I think my cream legbar is going to beat her to it.

My huge olive egger girl that should be starting back up soon as she's finished molting.

And my 9 month old barnevelder pullet that thinks she is too pretty to have to lay an egg.

My favorite new barnevelder cockerel I'm growing out. He is 4 months old.

The other guy has some tail fluff and he's molting his wing feathers right now.
