California - Northern

Boy I sure am a dork.... Before I went to Cabo I had set some eggs so that they will go into lockdown when I came home. Well I must have counted 21 days then added 3 for lockdown, because they hatched last night instead of this coming Tuesday.... ack...

The kids next door will be so disappointed, they wanted to see them hatch

Here's the motley bunch! ....anyone need a tolbunt?

Congrats Cheryl... I have done that, I was so panicked when I saw little chicks on the auto egg turner. Yikes! Thank got none got hurt..

Liz9910, I hope to have some Langshan chicks available by summer. My flock is all young. Some of the girls are approaching POL but the boys have more maturing to do before we put them together in breeding pens. What color/colors are you interested in? Jim Heinz (mrheinz77) is in Iowa and raises black Langshans. I have a couple of his boys and they are beautiful. Mikaela (rodriguezpoultry) is in Pennsylvania and raises blue, black, splash and white. I don't think that she ships chicks, only eggs and her birds are on winter break right now. I have several birds from her line. There are also a couple gentlemen in Tennessee, I think, who breed Langshans and ship both eggs and chicks. They are Pawhead Poultry and Skyline Poultry. I also have birds from their line (Meeks line). I planned on only raising BBS but I have a white pair that my husband loves. I'm thinking about adding whites to the list because they are too beautiful to eat.

I have an eclectic backyard flock but the Langshans are my favorites. I have a friend who has 10 acres in Brentwood and we are planning on setting up breeding pens this spring for the Langshans and Silver Penciled Plymouth Rocks.

Bah! My australorp hens are going broody...better bust out the broody hutch.

Would anybody here like some white OEGB Roos? I have too many and they need to go.
I already have 8 roosters (3 of which are squeaky crowing OEGBS) and 19 females ........ ((how did I get so many...?))

I hope the neighbors don't sign a petition to remove the chickens.... and us LOL!
My birds are "hard" molting right now. They look miserable with missing fluff and tail feathers.

It's not a north/south geographic boundary, albeit there is a central area. What defines n/c/s is more a way of life, attitude, culture, political division. The central is more an agricultural oriented. The south more lay back and casual probably due to better weather. The north more cosmopolitan because of the San Francisco influence. However, there is the extreme north that is rural oriented. Than there numerous divisions within these three areas. Not to mention the native Californians vis-a-vis those that migrate here from other states and countries. Basically, it's hard to make a clear distinction.

I really want some Langshans, I've PMed people from that thread but no one has any local, do you know of anyone selling chicks? I don't have an incubator (crazy I know)
See my previous post about Langshans. I thought that I was quoting this post when I wrote it but must have hit reply instead of quote! Also, check out this Langshan thread here on BYC: Langshan Thread!!! Welcome to 2012! It is not a super active thread like this Northern California thread is but the people on it are so nice and very knowledgeable about Langshans!

I like those mike. Is that Trex on the bottom of sides of the coops? This looks like his 6x10.  I like it with the door i the back.
How heavy are those? I was thinking of a larger one and 3 smaller ones. I like it with the sides wooded completely. He offers them on CL with only partially sided on the sides which i do not like so much. I may just make them myself it time will allow.

Hey Cooper. Thanks a lot man. I live he New coops!!
Yes these are 6x10 and he charged me an extra $20 to out the extra wood in the sides and to out the door like that. I guess he used more wood. I wish i had the skill set to build coops like that. We all se what happened to my hoop coops :( Lol

Mike love your new coops. They look great. I love when I get a new coop.. I wish I didn't fill them so fast..I really must focus on less breeds. Wishful thinking!

Thank you Molly! I can't wait to fill them up!

It was Saturday so I baked muffins for Breakfast! Plans were made by many of us to post pictures and work on repairing storm Damage. Hwy 1 still has problems in Sanoma, so if they can take their time fixing it, I can take my time too...Sorry chickens....

Zooweemama needs to sell her Duck Eggs for more!

Happy Chooks posted pictures first. Beautiful chickens.

Home Depot tip was posted. Sand is wanted for feather footed fowls.

Chooklet has chickens in the rehoming section. Roos are free!

I posted some pictures of my chickens. They got to free range during the coop work.

Miss Molly will hatch Quail for the NYD hatch and has rails for them(those are very small looking compared to the ones for chicken eggs--I have them to for my auto tuner that goes into my incubator)

Happy Chooks is teaching her Sons to hang up netting. Do they cook yet? One dinner a week for the 12 year old is a great way to start.

Jersey was too sick to make it to the Poultry show. Get well soon!

Trisha has a molting Hen. Why do they still look so good? Jeff is hoping for pen space to add these too.

Zowweemama has many egg layers! Lots of eggs for her today.

debs_flock showed a picture of a showgirl. So Glamorous!

Cooper got his first egg after the Hawk attacks and it broke!

liz9910 is looking for Langshans.

Duck eggs taste good and bernaise sauce is great on beef!

I posted pictures of my recent hatch.

We talked about Autosexing breeds and guessed on how that worked with this cross.

I can't wait to read about all the Chicken adventures today!

Thanks for the daily digest! Loving them!

We got 10 ducks eggs today. We collect chicken eggs all through the day though. Is that normal? My chickens tend to lay 10am-2pm or so. They all go into the coop though to lay. Today I found 2 Orps stuffed like sausages clucking away in ONE tiny lay box. I saw 1 head and 1 fluffy butt. Very funny.

Betty's eggs def look slightly different than the Buff Orps eggs. Her eggs are that creamy beige color but a little more brown, less pink and has white dots ALL over it. Will post a pic in a second. We will always know whose egg that one belongs to. One of the Buff Orps is our biggest pullet, she also has a slightly floppy comb. I read that is not a desirable trait for a SQ Buff Orp so I guess I wouldn't use her in my breeding program for the BOs. She is my fav among the Orps though. I call her Mama Cass. hehe

My chickens get Seasonal Affective Disorder if I don't give them light. Then I get sad when I have to buy eggs from the store. I swear I saw a teer in the eyes of my co worker that eats the eggs I sell to her at work every day...When I told her I was about out of eggs.

It's ok, I judge myself about it too. I am splitting the time up so they are not getting the light all winter. I will also end it as soon as the other pens start laying again.

I did a lot of research on this last year and the one thing that swayed me was the fact that Red Jungle Fowl do not take a break in the winter because they have no winter down in the Jungle where they are from. Molting is their break and they still molt with the lights on. I had one start this week. I bet they take a much shorter break down in Cabo too.

Are you back yet?
