Hi all, Life is crazy here. Kids home on break, I am enjoying vacation time but now I am down with that darn cold. YUCK :( I am in need of advice. Hawks are attacking my chickens. Two attacks yesterday, one this morning, went in the chicken run and killed two. The flew up to T.S. in auburn and bought 2 plastic owls. do i need more? or what else is better that works. then more sad news, @ Miss Molly, a raccoon killed 4 chickens. 1 lav hen and rlbw, and a black roo are the lucky ones. the RLBW i named the sisiters, they would sit at the edge when i open the door and then fly on my shoulders and sit and i could walk around with them on me. ash and brooke thought i was crazy, oh well. they are teens, LOL. my is making chicken coops for me while he is home and they got through the dog run we had attached to the coop. :( I am so sad I miss the sisters. the ones left are ok. scared today but ok. trap time for the raccoon. what to do about the hawks :(

I haven't been on here since before Christmas............Everyone seems to have prepared delicious meals and desserts! My mouth is watering just reading about your menus...even the homemade pizza! LOL! And, best of all, it sounds like everyone got to spend time with their kids and family.

It's wonderful that we've gotten a couple days of sunshine. Hopefully it will blow over tonight instead of drenching us with more rain.

Not much has happened here (a good thing) except one of my gorgeous, little blue silkies just started displaying wry tail. She is only 12 weeks old and may have been injured by my ornery Welsummer (who broke into the baby pen). I might have to find her a nice, pet-only home since it could also be genetic. My son wants to keep her and just "not hatch her eggs" and I could even test hatch the offspring, but I haven't decided yet. I'm such a sucker for cute, fluffy chickens!
I quoted some of you because you are incubating too. I can't explain how excited I am that this will be my first hatch with my own chickens. I put 6 of Mysty Blue's eggs in the bator on December 14. They should hatch January 4, next Friday! Actually 2 were clear, so I'm hoping the other 4 chicks hatch without any problems.
You own silkies are the MOST addictive of all. Well, your own showgirls are the very most...

Its supposed to rain from 8 PM until mid day tomorrow, I'm a little worried about the outside babies. Its so cold when its damp.

A big hawk is stalking them, one of my young roos jumped the fence to crow over the babies when he saw it. I was so proud of him, I threw some scratch, then he blew it by chasing every one else away from it, ha.

I twisted my ankle on nothing this morning and am sitting here doing a marathon watching homeland s1. Better then sitting in bed and whining!

Try CD's siny side up around the coop. Or cover your run. I had no luck with owls.

I am so sorry to hear about the raccoons and the Hawks! CapayValleyChick posted good advice for the Hawks. One thing I remember was hanging CDs and some of those shiny strips of plastic that they use for grapes and in Orchards.

Hopefully Kim will post the Hawk info again

Sorry about the hawks.
Music may work. Owl's you have to move around. Fishing line with reflective tape may work as well. Lots of t posts. Anything to make them think if they land there they will get injured or eaten. Once the hawk goes after chickens more than once they are hooked and will continue to go after the easy food source.
You can call the local Warden and say you are fearful of a Rouge hawk attacking you or your kids.
