Thanks, Deb! Around here, we hardly have to heat the house. I have the incubator in Spare Oom with the brooders. It is a constant 75 to 80 in there with the heat lamp going. I need to get a bigger syringe. I have a smaller one and it will take forever when I have to add water. Good idea about the slurpee straw! Monet may have to suffer through a slurpee in order for me to get the straw!

*sigh* Maybe I am being a little too cavalier in my adding of water.......? I just pull the top off the incubator, and add a cup of water to trough 1. It takes about 1 cup when the humidity starts to drop. Maybe I haven't added enough though and that is why it is only lasting 2 days max. I am going to try the food coloring so I can really see for sure.

I put the top back on and humidity and temp are back up within 30 minutes. In my little pea brain, reading that the Brinsea actually allows a cooling down period one or two times a day, I thought perhaps it wouldn't be a big deal if I open it to add water.... Kind of the same effect you now? Is that ignorance at its best?

For those of you that have found the King Feed Non GMO Soy free one, is it fairly expensive compared to the regular? I am trying to find it closer to me than out where Ron is but I will go there if I need to. I am in Roseville..... anyone know if it is anywhere close by?

Ooh, Ron, thanks so much for sharing your pictures! What lovely chickens you have. Love the urban predators, haha. We have some pretty vicious ones, too.

Here is my favorite chick, Buffle. She's growing up so fast! She talks to me and jumps on my shoulder when she gets a chance.

Wait until they are 16 weeks old or so and you can have a sample of their poo tested first. UCD charges 10.50 for the test and they had the results back to me in two days.

It is at cahfs.ucdavis.edu
Another thing for my note pad!

Because obviously it will get lost in this thread and when I need it I won't be able to find it!

The Non GMO is the same as the Natural non soy--22 something for 50 pounds. It probably will not be available until later this month. Call the Roseville store and they will get it from the Charmichael Store which is a Warehouse for Western Pet and Feed.

I would use the Natural Non Soy if the Non GMO is not available yet. It is a great feed for the price and saves a bunch over the Organic Non soy non corn feeds.

Thanks! The Roseville store just opened literally around the corner from me but they opened it in an outside strip mall shopping center, so space is limited there, BUT if they can order it for me that would be great.

Very Nice! I love them when they are friendly.

Here are some pictures from our outside time yesterday.

I think the ducks peeking over the edge are hilarious. Love ducks.

I took this so you could see Balthazar (the yellow chick with dark wings in the center of the picture) compared to a RIR, Colombian Wyandotte, Partridge Cochin, Black Giant and Buff Orpington.

I should have remembered to use the food coloring, would have made it easier. I think I need a note book siting RIGHT here with me so that when I read all of these handy dandy tidbits, I write them down. Otherwise they go into that dark hole called my brain and get lost until someone says it AGAIN! Getting old stinks! I used to have a memory...... now all I have is vague recollections!

You're singing my song here! I actually did start a notebook. Guess what..... I can't find it!

So now I have tons of bookmarks in my chicken stuff folder. Took me a while to figure out how to do that too. I feel like a dinosaur sometimes, or else living in the wrong century.

Well luckily I didn't have to wait for my eggs, because of my shipping delay they seemed to show up on the same day, BUT I didn't wait and verify the reading so I have been trying to do it after the fact. We will see what I get from the shipped quail eggs that I have no idea how long they were sitting outside, and coming from a blizzard area! They were probably frozen and then scrambled and then baked in the heat on my porch! lol Ron you are so funny! You are assuming I have a flashlight that will be bright enough!

I was going to try it on Sunday with what I have here and see if I need to go get a brighter light. The quail eggs have big brown splotches on them so I am not sure how thick they are or how easy they will be to see through. I didn't even realize the Australorp come in different colors. I really like the black ones because of the beetle green and purple shine on their feathers. But they weren't the friendliest of chickens They weren't mean, just standoffish.. They did lay long pointy eggs of medium size though on a pretty regular basis, but mine were hatchery stock. I saw some at the Stockton show that were GIANT! They were so big! It was funny to see those GIANT birds lay the same medium pointy egg though. They were all laying about 10:30 that day so I got to see what they produced and compare it to my hatchery stock. For some reason in my mind if the bird is big they should have laid a big egg too! Right? Nope!
Quail will pass chick/no chick but have thick shells and are hard to see through. If your flashlight is small enough get a piece of plumbing coupling that is the size of your flashlight on on side and either 1/2 inch (quail) or 3/4 (chicken). This will focus the light enough to use it for a candler. If you want to get a good inexpensive flashlight that is 400 lumes try the Cree q5 led off amazon or some less evil retailer. Quail that does not have a chick in it will have the light shining through the egg and and be faintly blue. Those that have a chick will look kind of full and not shine the light on the top. If you have a few of each you'll be able to tell. If they are all one or the other it might be harder.
