Betty is the healthiest broody I swear. She leaves her nest to eat and drink, sometimes dirt bathe and comes back. Usually twice a day. She is however incredibly cranky. She is chasing all the other chickens away from her- even when she is out of her nest. Although she yells at us she lets us pet her though. I love her. :) Yay for broodies! I hope to pick up some eggs from Jeff to slip under her- possibly today. I am culling Gary today. I'm very sad but it is necessary. RIP Garebear. :( Hubby is going to bury him in our little pet cemetery. I hate being the only who has to do these things. No one is else is 'capable'. :( At least I have some Betty/Gary babies from their wild love affair. Funny thing about them? She would never let anyone else mate her. Not the top roo, not ANY other roo. She beat them all up- only Gary. Silly hen.

How cute is that!

Anyone good with bug bites? Clementine has 20+ mosquito bites all over, but one of them is smaller and has red around it (not like a bullseye, though) I would have thought we would have seen a tick there, although I did just pull a tiny one out of her armpit (I saved the tick and drew a circle around the bite. It was smaller than a flea, not full at all.) Here's a picture, it's the bite on her shoulder. I checked the middle and can't see fang marks. You can see the "normal" mosquito bites down her arm.

Yikes! Poor baby! I'm not good with advice on this but maybe someone else will have an answer for you!

BCollie I hope you are feeling less sad now.

Same for me except I am going for the broody hen method of hatching. I may order from Sandhill at some point because I think I admire their oporation. Also because the sexing process can be really hard on chicks and they only do st. run. We can give the roos happy lives for about 4 months before we process them and sell extra girls.

for broody hens!!! I am hoping the presence of 3 little chicks in my chickenyard will encourage another broody or 2! I just don't want any of chiqita's broody drama around here!

So sorry that you lost one. I've had that happen with shipped chicks. One out of the group suddenly sickens and dies within hours while the rest thrive. Now that I have an incubator, I'm not buying shipped chicks. It's eggs or picked up chicks only.

I think if I ever want chicks again, I will put eggs under a broody hen! I just didn't have a choice this time, as shipping was the only way to get all the breeds I wanted!(I am extremely picky)
BCollie I hope you are feeling less sad now.

Oh my gosh I could never do that. I mean I have nothing against people raising animals for meat, it's 110% better than store-bought meat...but geez, I almost started crying when this little 5? day old chick died! I wouldn't be able to eat a bird I raised for 4 months, I'd probably see it then run to my room and start bawling my eyes out lol
Buuut I don't eat meat anyways, so it doesn't matter :)

Woke up this morning, looked into the brooder. Said "hi girls"...My talking made my foster dog jump up and make a ton of noise in his crate, so all the chickies scattered...except one

My favorite of the two Splash Andalusians. She was acting fine yesterday, viciously attacking my finger for yogurt...I don't know why she died?! Now I'm scared my other chicks are gonna die?!
Help me :( I'm freaking out.

Rest in peace little girly

I'm sorry....

I am trying not to have a favorite just because they seem to be the first to go. Plus I have Roosters in there and they will for sure have to go.
Oooh, how cool! I'm jealous. Although not of the amount of poo and soggy bedding you'll be knees deep in. What is a Silky Duck?
We are doing 4H with out 6 year old. We may wait until next year, but we called the people and went to one of the meetings. It was really neat! I was in Campfire as a kid and enjoyed it, but I would have loved 4H. We aren't Boy Scout/Girl Scout people either.
I think it's wonderful what you're doing for Curly! And what a sweet husband to postpone your plans. Aww. She totally does look like a little Prima Ballerina!

Well my mosquito bites look like the top one on your daughters arm.

You know.... I hear the processing part can be really hard on chickens too!

JK!!!

Jordan- I did answer on FB. I hope it helps. We usually keep the treatment simple and encourage our kids to scratch with a clean wash cloth IF they can't control the itching (my older kids can, a 3 year old however may struggle). We medicate with hydrocortizone (OR benadryl cream if we happen to have some on hand, it gets lost a lot lol) and tea tree oil for germs. The kids usually do a decent job of leaving them alone if we keep it medicated.

I'm sorry....

Our free exotic chick is straight run, we are hoping that it turns out to be a she...I would hate to have to give it away! Although I don't think I'd have too much trouble finding a pet home for a Silver Polish, they're really cool looking.

I told my self I wasn't going to have a favorite...But this little Blue Andalusian of mine is so friendly, I can't help but love her more than all the others
