Just something I picked up from a lady at 4h who has been helping classrooms hatch for over 20 year...the said to tape a cup over that dial to cover it and put it out the way of inquiring little fingers. I hope you have a great hatch!Walked into the first grade class I work in yesterday, and saw a Little Giant incubator. Found out that instead of Beta fish and snails like last year, we were going to hatch chicks for the science module! Yeah! The teacher I work with has ZERO experience with hatching or chickens, so I was really glad I hatched this Spring and learned as much as I did. Unfortunately, I did not hatch with a Little Giant. Tips would be appreciated.
We collected eggs from 3 sources (local EE, local mystery eggs that might be barred rocks based on the feather that was stuck to one of the eggs, and one lone fertile store egg), and had a little egg development lesson with the kids. Turned off the lights and was able to show them how to candle. One of the eggs was badly cracked, so I broke it open and showed them the yolk with the bullseye, or "doughnut." We weighed them and also marked the air cells. Set 17 eggs, and our goal is to get 10 to hatch, or to at least have a higher hatch rate than one of the other teachers.I really hope that we do, because the other teacher said she gets 25-50%. I think we can totally beat that! I got over 70% with my first and only hatch, and almost half of those were shipped.![]()
I am a little worried about that incubator, though. The temp adjuster is right on top where the kids can reach it. Only one thermometer of unknown accuracy. Eek! The incubator I used for my hatch is in use until next weekend. I think I might do a swap as soon as I can. It is a Hovabator that has the controls on the inside, under the lid.
In other news, today was a super warm 78 degrees.Hot for us this time of year, although nothing like what you guys are getting.![]()
If the eggs are under a broody she has instincts on her side. They are so close to hatching you won't see much if you candle. They will be mostly dark with an air cell. Anything that glows isn't going to hatch since there was no development, they really do "glow" compared to an egg in the late stages of development. Hens hatch eggs that have been rained on, rolled around in the dirt, pooped on by other girls adding their eggs, at this stage of the game all we can do is watch and cheer them on IMO. Others will chime in who have much more experience with hatching, I'm waiting for my 4th batch to hatch. Broodies are the best! This thread goes so fast I can't keep up! Great info and adorable pictures/videos!
Ok so my broody girl who left her first nest 6 days from the hatch date for a new nest of eggs, spilled her water on new nest that is due to hatch on the 9th. And she had a big runny poo near them and it got on them too.... Idk what to do with this situation! I've never candled an egg so I'm not sure ill make the right desition on what I think I might see.any ideas? Thanks!![]()
Oh my goodness! Those are beautiful boys l!!! How is this last OE hatch going?
Finally got another pip, thinking I should have some zipping going on tomorrow while we are planting onions. Yuck, why can't we plant white nectarines instead.
Ron what size boxes? I am using a single box to get more eggs in it. using large bubble on top bottom and sides 2 rows. I have 4x7 small bubble pouches I use to wrap the eggs. I put bubble pieces in between the loose areas. I have 16 eggs going out this morning. Have not had a issue yet except 1 egg was broke that went to washington out of 16. But 3 other times where good to local and far. I have heard Oregon and Washington are some of the roughest on eggs. if I only ship 9 eggs I can double box but the postage is the same roughlyPutting them into tissue paper and then into egg cartons works ok if shipped by ground locally. If it will take more than two days to get to the destination, the package is transferred to Ariborn Express. That transfer is rougher than straight USPS ground.
I have had very broken eggs packed like that. The Meeks method double boxed has been the best all around method and the very best for Air shipped eggs.
I can't wait to see the chicks from Thistledown Farms!
Yeah Deann. I will take a dozen please . He is looking greatHere is a picture of my new Crele Penedesenca rooster. I gave him away 2 years ago and when I found myself short a roo I called the woman I gave him to and was soooo happy she still had him. I asked her if I could buy him back and she said I could have him. Poor guy had to spend 2 months in quarantine in a 10 X 10 dog run, but now has a pasture to romp in . His new lady friends are quit enamored by him.

Here is a picture of a Cream Legbar rooster and an Olive Egger (Cream Legbar X Crele Pene). As you can see Cream Legbars, Crele Penedesencas and OE (crele pen X Cream legbar) rooster look very similar except for the leg color.

lol I was thinking that on the first postI was afraid we were going to weed wack a hen on a clutch so we searched each section before cutting. I was shocked by the piles of eggs we found. I figured some were being laid in the weeds, but I did not realize we were loosing so many.
Good morning everyone.
I've got 3 new pips this morning which puts me at 50% pipped.
I was wondering how my biggest egg would do, its about the size of a handbell ball, it is the furthest along in zipping. Seems to want to come out the side, hey as long as she gets out I'm happy. Everyone has pipped in the air cell so far, with the shape of some of them that's an accomplishment!
I have the information from Deann in my chicken folder:Ron what size boxes? I am using a single box to get more eggs in it. using large bubble on top bottom and sides 2 rows.
yes I use regional a and b boxes so will try and see if I can double them. would fit less eggs so maybe when I can only send a dozen or less.I have the information from Deann in my chicken folder:

The cost to ship in a Reg. A Box is usually $9.88 across the US and $5.65 within CA. Much cheaper than having to pay $11.85 for Med. Priority for small orders.
Unfortunately, they only carry the side loading boxes at the Post Office so you have to order the top loading online. They come in bundles of 25 and are FREE .. oh and they drop em at your door!!! There are other box sizes available on-line too. Check it out. It usually take up to 10 days for delivery, so order well in advance.
The Regional A boxes are 10 X 7 X 4.34 and the
Regional B are 12 X 10.25 X 5
for comparison the Medium Flat rate box is 11 X 8.5 X 5.25 (in the middle between the two Reg. Boxes)
I keep all three boxes on hand and depending on Zip Code ship accordingly. It is usually cheaper to ship using the regional boxes (by weight) than using the Flat Rate Boxes.
I ship my eggs rolled like burritos standing up in the box so the the 4.75" or 5.25" height works very well. I don't use the taller boxes.

You want to order Regional A1 and Regional B1 - they are top lading. The 2's are side loading and don't work for eggs.
