Dear Husband relaxing watching the chicks explore their new urban run/coop. We finally got the door built and on this afternoon! Became a race to complete this project before hyper heat hit. Looks like Tilly, Inga, and Ting will be happy inhabitants. We do have 2 more Bantam Cochin chicks, one Blue and one Frizzle, who look more like males every day. Will evict the boys out once they crow.

I love the coop! :D

Quote: I talked to Kings Feed and the rep for my area. You only have to buy 5 pallets....I think it's 40 bags a pallet, or is it 20? Maybe 20 because I had enough people committed to purchase to pay for 1/2 the order. I have the property to store that quantity and sell it but don't really want to get involved in another business. In my quest to bring it to my area I found that a place in Chico is bringing it in seasonally. Not one of the feed stores but the hay supplier...and someone in Gridley. I'm too tired to come up with the names but I will find my brain in the morning if anyone's interested.
Quote: Isn't it funny how we teach them things that we didn't mean too? And it's sticks like glue!
Quote: I have this one. I twist it through the fencing so it mists into two runs. Mine has an adjustable nut and is at the lower end of the hose so maybe that's why it puts out a good mist.

Love your set up! Nothing like enjoying the end of the day after a job well done.

such lovely pictures -- cats and chicks and broodies!

i have a cute story to share: put all the chicklets away into their coop just now, and as the fog is rolling in again & it's chilly, the mamas and their chicks all went up the ramp pretty early -- i watched them all in, as the youngest marans chicks have been having trouble jumping up into the nesting box their mom settles in, so wanted to be on hand to help (one did it on its own, one needed assistance) -- but black australorp Daisy, whose chicks are 3 weeks old, apparently decided to show them all how to roost -- first she perched on one of the lower branches, & they all (five!) followed suit, arranged in various spots on the perches. then Daisy moved over to the PRIME roosting spot, on the highest branch (where Max usually roosts) -- and all five chicks followed, with three snuggled underneath her on the branch and *two* perched on her back.

crazily adorable!!!

did i have a camera with me? of course not!!

you'll just have to use your imagination -- i just loved how proud those two babies on her back looked, being up so high! (i'm sure they'll all get dislocated back to a nesting box, once Max & the other girls decide to go to bed.)
Oh it sounds just wonderful! Sometimes I wish I had hens and chicks. I wonder if you could take the hen to the male at another place and bring her home, like they do dogs... Enjoy the fog. It's going to be in the 100's this weekend in Sacramento and maybe to the foothills.

My girls had not eaten since late morning(but they did spend quite a while in the yard this afternoon). Went to grab their new bag of food out of my car to realize I'd locked the keys in the car. So I called roadside assistance, at 11:30pm and waited until past 12:20am, so I could feed my chicks before I went to bed. The things I do for my pets...

Ah a chick show!

Chicken TV is my favorite entertainment. DH and I do this all the time, but it's usually at the end of the work/chore day with a cocktail in our hands. Lately it's been on the deck to oversee the grazing of the goslings/ducklings on the back lawn.

Re the heat. If you don't have a mister you can make them a puddle/damp area. The little ones love scratching in it and laying in it and pecking at it.

Did my best to get "What sex is this chick?" pics for you guys. I have to send them from my phone to my email then upload them here but will get them up today. Wanted to grow out and process the extra roosters but the pen I was going to use is no longer available..chicken math. I think I only have 4 or 5 of them. I may take them to the feed store and just hope that someone will be good to them before they are processed :(

Deanne was it you who got the interesting responses to your CL ad? I got a series of semi literate solicitations from some guy, nothing overt, over my SFH add. Admittedly the title is "Rare and Beautiful Swedish Flower Hen Cockerel/Rooster" apparently the fact that it included pics and was in the farm and garden section was insufficient evidence for the guy who wanted to "get something going" and took "a chance on me by sending me his real contact info."

uhhhhhh Thanks???? My husband said that using the word "cockerel" was my downfall and that I should refer to them as "young roosters" in the future.

Sheesh.

H is taking me away for our Anniversary which was in May but we postponed on account of chicken needs. We are headed to Mar Vista Cottages which is between Pt Arena and Gualala. They deliver fresh eggs to your porch every morning of your stay from their mixed flock and welcome guests into their gardens to pick what ever they want to eat.

H made all the plans. Do I know how to pick em or what???
