Got rid of my confirmed Icelandic boy and my suspected Icelandic boy yesterday. A colleague of mine took them and I told him that I would let him know where he can get a pullet or two. I got mine from Deann but she hatched them from eggs she got in a BYC swap so I I don't think she breeds them but I know Happy Chooks and Debs Flock both do right?

I had to split up my choc rock pair :-( I am keeping the pullet...Godiva who is as sweet as her name and will be coop mates with Curly and my little Porking, Petunia. But I couldn't keep him. I told my colleague that he may be able to get hatching eggs from Renee but he has no bator yet. When I get a broody I may buy half dozen from her and try to hatch him a little girl. I wasn't going to keep the pullet but she is an on your arm, shoulder, head curious little lap chicken and she is cool looking so what was I to do?

I have encouraged him to join BYC and this forum in particular and will do so again but if any one else breeds Icelandics and may have pullets for him can you let me know. Thanks

I envy those of you with gardens. I love to garden and grew up growing things. It's like magic. I think that maybe next year if we can figure out a way to keep chickens and deer and peacocks out and still have it be attractive we may give it a go! At Mar Vista where My DH took me for our anniversary they have raised beds made from cinder blocks. Herbs and flowers were planted in the holes in the cinder blocks and other stuff was planted in the beds.

Going to put the finish touches on the quarantine pen today. I will give them a head of cabbage but what sort of things should I give my new ones while they are in there to help them deal with the confinement? I have closed off one end of the feed shed so they can have some space outside the XL dog kennel but it is still all inside space since the girls free range. Any Idea?? the space is about 4 feet deep by 5.5 feet wide.

Enjoy another cool day you guys!

I am so jealous! We have lived in this house for 4 years, and it was a drug house prior to us living here. I keep trying to grow veggies, and its like the soil is tainted......they always get horrible mold, or some strange bugs, or just randomly shrivel up and die. I have never had this tough of a time growing veggies. It is super frustrating. The plants that do make it end up with very little yield.

Our house was a drug house before we bought it too. I think their drug of preference was the more natural kind though. There is a special "grow room" built into the garage and all the wiring and ducting to the garage room is weird. Have you tried doing a raised bed garden bed or plant in containers? You could bring in new dirt, or get one of those little soil test kits to see what's wrong with the soil.

Beautiful!! When did you plant? My daughter planted early and hers is like yours. We planted the week of Mother's Day but I've been using my special fertilizer so they're going crazy!!! I think it's going to be a good year!
I planted in late April. I know it was early, but I couldn't wait.

I have to leave in 30 minutes for baked goods judging today, got all my entries in last night. 49 of them!!! I only scratched two entries, cream puffs & coffeecake. Around 5:15 I totally ran out of oompf and called it good. Loaded up the car and headed for the fairgrounds. After we dropped off my entries, we went to the local brewery had a hamburger and a beer. It was nice just sitting and being waited on after all the baking and quick dinners for the last two weeks.

Do you have a big old baking pan that you can dig up a thick chunk of dirt/grass/weeds and put it in there for them? My chicks love eating the grass and then using the dirt for dust bathing - and it exposes them to what I have in my yard and other chickens already, at low doses. I think even using that for the older birds in quarantine would help acclimate them - and if they have a reaction to it you can treat them while still in quarantine. It also keeps them busy happily scratching at the dirt.

My garden is really taking off.

You are one of those SUPER WOMEN! Good luck!

I agree with the person who suggested raised beds or pots. Or have your soil tested.

They would like the box of dirt & grass. Can you find some seedy hay (like oat hay) for them? They've never had cabbage, so that will be a treat. That is a lot smaller space than they are used to.

You are a wise woman. Thanks!

I know :( I wish there was a way to let them know it was only temporary. In the meantime I would like to spoil them while they have to be locked up. I will do a tub o sod and get some oat hay in there with them.

I have a feeling you will do great. Looking forward to the judging results!
You two really do love burgers huh?

I am getting ready to set up a quarantine space today myself and was wondering what i could do to make it nicer. love the box of dirt idea. Mine is in an indoor space and I hate having them locked up.

I have seen a treat ball for chickens. Things like cabbage go into it and the chickens have to work to get it out. Entertaining them is not really what you do--Chickens like to work so the ball gives them work and that makes them happy.

My layers love it when I mow the lawn and give them their grass clippings. You should see them in the Fall when I let them have the leaves from the trees!

I was dating a man that lives in King's Beach.  We were lounging around on his deck and the phone rang.  It was a neighbor calling to say the "Mafia" was driving around the neighborhood looking for code violations.  He had to jump up and quickly remove a few unauthorized additions to his garden area.  They are insane.  There is protecting the lake and then there is just drunk with power.  I have always avoided property with CC&R's, just because you always get some retired person on the board with nothing better to do than nitpick. You are so correct! We have lived with those CC&R's. You are watched. Now at least we are on a private road on 3 acres so they don't come up the road.

Sorry for the loss of your girl!

My garden is really taking off. I have squash, cucumber, pumpkin, eggplant, garlic, peppers, green beans, peas, corn, lettuce, and tons of different tomatoes. I've even been able to keep out the chickens. -win!!

I am so jealous of all you garden people that got your gardens in. I had to choose between and coop and a garden and since I hatched chicks the coop won.

I am so close to you I may come sneak in your back yard and steal some produce and blame it on the chickens. ;)

How did you find someone to take your Roo? CL hasn't turned up much for me. I had a Cream Legbar croak at me today so I know the crow is coming.

I have heard about chickens getting impacted or sour crops from grass strands that are too long. Have you heard of that? I would gladly throw the grass clippings to the birds, but sadly my lawn was neglected a bit while I focus on the coop, so..... it may be too long.
