California - Northern

Wikipedia is very unreliable. Anyone can alter the information there. Logically, since north, central and south are directional terms, you would divide the state in 3rds. I would consider the line on the map as the dividing line between central and southern CA and around Sacramento to be the line between central and Northern CA. I wonder if the names are old and were established before the true northern CA had been settled. Kind of like calling Iowa and Oklahoma the "Midwest" when it much closer to the East Coast.

We really like it when anyone that wants to post here and try to make all that want to post here welcome. We have people from the mountains, Central Valley, Sacramento Valley, Clear Lake, Central coast, northern coast, Oregon and Oregon Border and so on. For a while there was a person from Washington that would come down and stay in a cabin in Clear Lake that would post here.

Oh jeez, my friend in San Jose has 14 mille fleur d'uccle eggs due to hatch at the end of the month and he asked me if I wanted any... I really shouldn't, but it sure is tempting.

On another note, OMG about the flesh eating bacteria! I'm glad she's playing sports again. Just gave myself a good puncture wound with a power drill that slipped off the screw I was holding, and that story is getting me all paranoid now. Last puncture wound ended up with me on penicillin drip in the emergency room, gah.

Said wound was incurred as I was finishing building up our worm bin greywater filtration. I read somewhere that we have to be careful about keeping the chickens away from this water (we were planning to water our garden with it and the birds hang out there). Anyone have any experience with reclaimed greywater and chicken safety?

We've not used grey water, but good luck keeping the chickens out of the garden. We build more fences around our raised beds than anything else. They always find a way in. I think goats would be harder to keep out which is why we don't have them. I would think that as long as they don't get to standing water it would be OK. Chickens body temps runs 101/103°, they love going through compost piles, the increased body temp helps them cook what they ingest.

There are others here who may have tried using reclaimed water and can give you their experiences.

A big cardboard box should be fine for a ride of less than 10 minutes, right?

Google maps should have a setting based on how well you know your area--I reduced the first 8 directions (out of 9) to "Go past Mary Peacock"

If they are day old chicks, that will be fine. Line the bottom with paper towels so they don't slip and injure their legs. If they are older, you'll want a top on the box or they can get out.

Dominique chickens are on my list for someday. I like their history and of course their black and white pattern.

I read that they were used as clean up birds at dumps. They ate the refuse and supplied eggs and meat. They also lived in a fairly harsh environment and did not get sick from it. They are very tough birds!

Good choice and I would love to see pictures.

Great heritage breed. And like most are hard to find good ones.

Sadly my bator is empty. I am switching out electrical switches and plugs this and next week so the power will be on and off a lot.
