I have the auto waters that have the red bowl. When I worm my chickens I have to take the bowls off so they will only drink the water that has the Ivomec in it. I have to then cover the tip of the stem that feeds the water bowl because the chickens love to nibble and drink the water bead at the tip. Now I am thinking that I should change over to the nipple waterers because the chickens seem to enjoy that and it would be such a cleaner water source for them. So I would say go for the nipple waterersThank you ChickNmamma, great info! I really like the hose idea too. I guess I could try the nipples first, the little cup ones look like they could have issues with the plastic floats. I'm wondering how old the chickens would be to use them. I couldn't imagine babies getting the hang of it, but perhaps so. It's , like you said, more natural.
I will keep an eye out for that stockton show for sure!!
I used the chicken nipples when I first got set up last year. I tried them with a bucket at first and the chickens took to it very fast. It worked well but I was not loving having to carry the water bucket back and forth, especially with the nipples underneath. I had to set it on top of something that would not hit the valves and bend them. I switched them over to having a a bucket set up outside the pen that I just refill and attached the nipples to a 3/4" PVC pipe that ran inside the pen. I had 3 valves and all of them leaked a lot once I moved them to the PVC pipe. I went to the red bowl and it works very well. No leaking and it rarely gets cold enough to freeze here. I have seen the nipples that are already set into a "saddle" that just snaps on to the PVC and those might work better without leaking, but by then I had already gotten the bowl. I plan to hook the PVC line into a permanent water source in the next week or so.I have the auto waters that have the red bowl. Walt....is that confirmed? Do they know the Urbanchicken blog is giving the Red Bluff location?
Thank you fowlman . Stockton sounds like one I better not missFerndale is a good show, but Stockton is the largest show in the west and the best place to buy birds. I go to all the California shows. NV show was last month and the Stockton show is always the last weekend in January.

My girls have a nipple waterer, but I haven't convinced myself they will get enough water, so they still have an inverted jug waterer also, taking up space... I know at least some of them drink from the nipples, but I haven't been keeping track of who I see using them. I just worry they will get dehydrated! I don't know how a dehydrated chicken acts...

Love all of the water ideas! I'm glad there is so much good feed back on the nipple waterers. I definitely wouldn't of tried them before. And Alpinebutterfly, thank you for the pics. I really like your set up. I'll show it to my project man over here.I used the chicken nipples when I first got set up last year.
