There is a breeding discussion on facebook im arguing 3 weeks is a minimum not a really sure point. People are like oh 1 week is fine and bringing up the speam stacking. I keep bringing up my oliver egger disaster

I have always waited 3 weeks before changing roosters but at the Stockton show I was talking to a well known breeder that says one week will do except for a special breed that started with an F (I can't remember, because I don't have them...Famoiyas or something like that). If a BCM pullet/hen gets loose I ban her to the layer pen for at least 3 weeks,. actually a lot longer because I don't get around to catching her to move her back.....LOL. I have one in the layer pen still from last season that is laying a really nice egg. I need to get her back to Big Boy but for now she is being covered by one of his sons. I never seem to get around to all I have in my mind to do.......LOL

Today we found my daughters Bantam Leghorn cock dead. Last night, he looked like the picture above and we moved him inside. We believe it was from red mites. He has always been sensitive to mites, if that's possible. He would get them even when yhe others didn't and they were very hard to erradicate on him. We treated him for mites 6 days ago: dusted him with Sevin, treated with Revolution, changed his bedding and sprayed his coup with Sevin. He was holding his own this week and was eating and drinking. We were giving him Nutradrench. Yesterday, I retreated him as the second round for newly hatched mites. His poop was normal, but yesterday I purchased Ivermectin to give him as a last ditch effort.

Today, even though none of my other birds have mites, I will dust them all again.

We are pretty sad about the whole thing and all the effort we put out to save Hercules. If anyone has any words of wisdom, we would love to hear them. Could we have done a better job? Are some chickens more susceptible?

:hugs I'm sorry about your loss! Sounds like you tried your best!

I totally understand! I finally got my hands on some! We'll see how it goes! There is people on here who have some. I'm JUST starting my Serama project. I have a Serama Cock Bird and a Serama hen but they've only been together for a few weeks. I'm near Placerville. I'm hoping for at least a few of the 5 developing eggs to hatch!

I would like to come see your Serama's sometime :)

@ronott1 can temp spikes mess them up? Something caused our bator to spike up to like 102-103 the other day and im afraid it couldve killed them.
i really hope it didnt >·< gahh im going to go crazy before they even pip lol

It depends on how long it spiked. They will die at that temp but not that fast.

There is hope for your hatch!

@Luvinmyhurd i just hope im over thinking and they will hatch okay

I did the same thing! About worried myself sick! Their pretty resilient little things! If the spike was short it's probably fine. My friends granddaughter turned the heat to 110% for a short period of time and she still had a great hatch (she knew she was going to have hard boiled eggs)! Not to say thats good BUT for a short period of time they should be ok. Hope you have a good hatch!

Im not sure how long it spiked up for i just happened to look in on them and saw the temp was up to high. if thfy were dead (i hope they arent) wouldnt the eggs like stink?

I am sorry for your loss!

Here in CA we have a free Necropsy service. Double bag him and get him into the fridge. Do not freeze.

Wendy, So sorry........the lab is over behind the fairgrounds. I think it's on the corner of Fulkerth & Soderquist. I have other chicken friends that have used the service.

I am so sorry you lost your beautiful boy! How sad! They do make a product called Dienomite strips that you hang in front of the nesting boxes and door (small entry hole) of your coop that is permeated with pyrethrin. When it brushes against the chickens back it deposits the pyrethrin on their feathers and in turn kills the mites that are on them. I think you need to get the mites under control with spraying the coop and then the Dienomite strips help keep them off your chickens.

Good luck!

Julie in Madera has Seramas & she will be at the Fresno show with her friend Teresa & I at my vendor table. She was Mooncatfarms but I think she is in the process of changing her name.
