I have an egg ediquette question:

When I "gift" eggs to friends and neighbors, is it necessary to inform them that the eggs may or may not be fertilized? I created a small label for the carton, buy I would rather not clutter it with non-essential info.

The friends I give my eggs to are well intentioned urban-ites and are proud if the fact that they support cage free and free-range farms. However, having to explain to them what fertile is, may just be TMI and too groody (yes I did just say that) for them to handle.

It really does not make any difference in the eggs so that is up to you. If they will freak I would not tell them directly.

Maybe mention that you have a rooster with them? A lot of people do not think you can get eggs without a rooster any way.

Haha, yes. I agree with Ron. On awkward conversations 101 just mention that you have a beautiful rooster in your flock…..I made the mistake once of saying that I had decided to eat the eggs in July instead of putting them in the incubator. The science lesson was immense . It is really sad at how far removed from our food we have become!

So true about mentioning the rooster. It's subtle. Sometimes I'm too direct.

Problem solved. Thank you.

honestly, i give/trade eggs with friends & colleagues all the time & i don't bother to mention it -- i'm pretty sure they all know i have roosters, and i figure, if they CARE about fertilized vs. not, they will ask (as my neighbors once did, they were going to use the eggs for Passover, i think, and the eggs specifically could not be fertilized -- so off to the grocery store they went to buy more eggs).

Strange but true....... My #1 asked question from non chicken people is "Do you have to have a rooster to get eggs"........believe it or not.......LOL

I was one of "those" people, Thanks Grandma, I do answer that question a lot. The people I work with are becoming educated. They all know I have roosters.

Wolftracks in Modesto did have Silver Phoenix you can check with her.
I have phoenix hatching right now. I picked 14 eggs at the Stockton Show from Rambob59 (https://www.backyardchickens.com/u/242730/rambob59) . 12 or the 14 developed and it looks like all 12 are going to hatch. The ones that have hatched so far are super healthy and lively. I got both SDW and GDW. I am super excited.

edited to add: I think he is in the Stockton area.
