This is a Valentine Weekend themed conversation you would only find on BYC!

Speaking of procreation. Today there are two chicks at least. Broody mama hatched what I presume is a Del but could be a male sex link yesterday PM

and sometime between 10pm and 4 am the little bantam in the bator burst out of the shell. Seriously I can't see a single piece of it in there with the lid on it's like it pipped then spent the next 11 hours getting its strength up and then it just shattered the thing

No pip in the other egg yet. But the one that hatched is scudding around the bator fluffy and feather legged and apparently healthy

Love this thread! The conversation here is so interesting! (I was going to use a different word but thought not!

Yeah for the chicks! I have 24 in the incubator that are due to hatch tomorrow. It will be day 20 this evening but there are already 8 with pips! Yikes! I'm going to have to run out and buy another heat bulb since my back up one broke. I keep thinking about ordering one of the Premier heat plates. The biggest one is too big for my brooders but I would need a bigger one than the small one so that means two of them. Just can't make up my mind.

no question that roosters are highly interested in mating, and have lots of behaviors to look after the flock -- but it's anthropomorphizing (i.e. projecting our human emotions about the subject onto non-humans) to presume that he feels "satisfaction" in the same way we describe humans feeling satisfied after sex.  there's certainly no indication that there's any equivalent of the orgasm (a huge physical build-up and release) in the avian world.  but also nor should we presume that the females do or don't "enjoy" it -- it's just what it is, and some squat readily, some don't.  they all have the some level of biological drive to procreate, which undoubtedly varies, but i really don't think that human ideas of romance or sexual titillation apply.

HeeHee- I covered anthropomorphism AND gratification yesterday with the girls , though it was in English and science. Neither enjoyed the conversation... Perhaps if I used the analogy of the birds it would be more facinating to them? Lol byc incorporated into my homeschooling day. Love it!

Yay for burly baby chicks! I'm over here wondering about the gene dilution of the olandsk as they seem to require a bit more help than other breeds I have worked with at hatch... Shhh that wasn't ment to offend the breed... Don't turn me in.... I hear someone is working in importing a new line. I think berrytangle ?

Congrats on the new babies! I hope to haves some soon myself!

Question....My Brinsea is finally supposed to get her today. It was coming out of Florida and I think all the weather on the east coast put Fedex behind. The initial ETA on it was last Thursday and I asked about moving the eggs over to it when I got the Brinsea stabilized. The answer then was "Yes" but the eggs would have only been about a week into incubation. They are on day 11 now . I know there are clear eggs and I will need to remove them anyway. Should I still move them over to the new 'bator once it is stable? Hmm......I just realized that if they hatch on time (the 28th) it will be a "birthday hatch" for my soon to be 4 year old granddaughter!

I'm in. But I have a couple of questions. Only kids swim?

I would like to see someplace where we could all post what we are bringing to trade/sell/donate. Maybe a special thread?

Anyone that wants to can swim silly........It's just that last time all us adult chicken lovers were caught up into chicken talkin' instead. I do think a couple adults went swimming though.....LOL
Great idea on the list of available trades etc. Everything I have is listed on my signature at the bottom of my posts & anyone that wants anything specific in hatching eggs just needs to PM me & I will save them out for them. I am not hatching much this year. My big incubator is loaned out & my fist batch I put in the Suro 20 yesterday is probably ruined because I woke up to it being off this morning...Darn it!!!! I had some really nice eggs in there too.
