Well i did an eggtopsy and now i wish i hadnt
hmm.png
one chick was fully formed and just barely pipped the aircell then diedand the two others idk what to make of it . heres the pics *graphic*
herez the fully formed chick any idea what happen?
And both of the other two were like this :

I think the temp was a little too low. Does your house temp vary? early season hatching can play havoc with styrafoam incubations. even if you bump the temp some. the best cure may be incubating in another room that the temp stays the same in.
Or wait till Temps do not flux so much outside.
@chiqita , this might sound like a stupid question, but what is a micro silkie?

-Kathy
Lol sounds small

It never stops sucking but it does get easier.
So says the silkie under my window.
Seremas are Fiesty little things. When Snickerdaddy Bites he holds on! Goes for the feet.
My cockerel Pascal (yes named after the chameleon from Tangled lol) attacked my foot one time, I was wearing shoes that didn't have a top, ouch pinched my skin. He got a lift off the ground with my foot (not hard) and has never tried that again lol.

She is about the size of a month old at 3. She was too small to be out with a momma I had to bring her in. She is with miracle and starseed now they are about a month younger but tower over her.

I stole the term from seremas. A lot of the a seremas are so small they cant lay and are called micros.

Congrats! Another stupid question... what are UofA Blues?

-Kathy

I think most of them on the west coast are from caj who got hers from u of a itself.

Tommy do you have a bantam coop?

I have a micro silkie comming up. I could get it dna tested (it is so small I don't think it will lay eggs or crow) that is going To need a special home. No comb area to speak of signs say girl but special needs for sure.

No I don't, would I need a designated coop for a silkie? What are this little ones special needs? I am interested but I work and we have a couple of trips planned so I hesitat

Remember how I wanted a broodie?

Well.... Somebody heard me and within a day, I had a broodie!

I also have insane MF leghorns that don't do what they are supposed to do.

I believe this one has gone broody. Or is trying to anyway. She has completed 2 whole days in this nest.

The video is of me risking my limbs to sneak in an egg and offer fresh shavings for nesting.

I do have to figure out a better spot for her but that will take a couple days of fixing.

This is very very funny. I had a Red Star who attempted to go broody last summer. She didn't get the memo either.

If tommysgirl is not interested, I'd love to add your micro silkie to my flock. I love the strange, odd, runty, weird ones. I have a mottled d'uncle with feathers that look like a frizzle but are curled. It was going to die at the feed store.[/QUOTE]
If The Keeper is set up for it, it would probably be a better fit right now

Thanks!! I did it, and it sucked. I guess I've been lucky up until now though. Thanks for all the support guys.

This is a wonderful group of supportive people. I am so sorry you had to do that but grateful you shared with us so we could all learn.

Two eggs had alot of liquid and all i coulf see was the chick curled up they were both tinier then they should have been and the third one was fully formed and pointed towars the aircell (beak was actually in the air cell membrane but didnt poke throug it also had absorbed most of the yolk as u can see in the first pic. aircells were all good size, humidity was 50-60% during incubating and 70-80% during hatching
I am sorry Nikki. I had one like that top pic under a broody. I think when mama had to get up to chase after a wild little hatchling it cooled off and died in the shell like yours. Heartbreaking.

Yes it would. Do you all find yourself looking at structures everywhere you go and sizing them up as potential coops? I do it all the time!

Was at the bottom of my feed sack so took it out and left the empty bin open all night. This morning There were about a half dozen mice in there. (((((((shudder)))))) I am not a fan so I took the whole bin into the run and tipped it on its side. My Dorking cross and one of my pure Dorks each scored one. All that ancestral time around English farm houses taught them to be mousers. It reminded me of when I putt crickets in the brooder when they were little.
