She should last 8 days unless she is really skinny.

Thanks chiqita. I was so shocked at what was either the indifference or the ignorance. My mom went with me and I said how I simply didn't understand people who obviously cared about the animals and their general welfare, the place was clean so was the water and the animals had food...but didn't care enough to learn the...very simple...process of hatching with a broody. My contact is a vet tech for goodness sake!

Anyway I will send you her vitals and a couple of pics later. Thanks so much for your help!

Please keep us posted!  My son wants self-blue or blue-mottled.  Are you getting any of those?

I have a pair that's splash and black mottled and I'm setting some of their eggs too :)

CUTE! I would love some of your splash/mottled eggs some day for my silkied D'Uccle project. First Gen is due to hatch on Saturday of next week!

Ok, more crap today:

TLDR : Tylenol is OK in emergencies.

That is an interesting study, but if one wanted to expect the same results (no kidney damage), they have to be able to give no more than 10mg/kg, so about 30mg for an average size RIR hen. Might be possible with children's liquid, but probably too risky with pills.

They said short term when we were talking. Someones chicken has a compound fracture with bone sticking out and the vet wont see it :(.

Question: if lock down is a term chicken veterans don't like , what do you use for the time you stop turning and up the humidity?
I use set up for hatching. Lockdown makes too many of us think we can never open the incubator.

Quote: I give FF and every mornign when I put it out for the others, I put a small plant saucer with about a 1/4 of it in for the broody. I also put a small container of fresh water in. SHe seldome went for either right away and I would dip her beak in the water a few times and she would drink that way. She would eat the FF after I closed the lid to the nest box though. She did well with her weigh, but I have had some that were much skinnier at hatch.

Quote: In her defense...and having be a Vet Tech myself, I will say that, unless the practice they work for sees livestock on regular basis they probably don't know much about broody needs. Most vets treat companion animals (dogs, cats, the occaisional rabbit, guenea pig or rat) and know little or nothing even about the medical needs of poultry. Ranch Vets would know more, but even then, medical needs are entirely different then breeding needs.

Quote: Adorable!

Quote: I usually think of "set" to mean when the incubation process starts.

What fun! I love patterned babies! Watching my last batch of MFL grow out and really enjoying them :)

Do the mottled work like other BBS? Where you get blue or black out of the pair? Is the splash you are referring to a blue splash? If you have your separated out, we'd like to to get in line :) We have MF eggs growing and hoping to get chicks from @fortyfivefarm , but struggling to get Blue mottled which is what my son wants. I can find black pretty easily.
