California - Northern

Hi, I just joined and live in NorCal. I read thru the debate about where the line is and want to add my thoughts. You are NorCal if you use 'hella' as an adjective (as in "That is a hella cool coop you built") and SoCal if that use makes you want to hurl.

I think that may be more generational than geographical.

I was born and raised in Northern CA. I currently live in the redneck foothills. That makes me want to

Welcome to the thread!

I have 2 chicks that are about a month old now. One is a Easter egger (Penny) and the other is a light brahma (Henny).
400

400

I didn't do much research on breeds, just chose based on availability in town - Davis, CA. Henny is becoming quite a big beauty and Penny is smart and cute.
I had chickens years ago, so I'm not totally new, but there is so much more info and community now. I am thrilled about BYC and the NorCal thread especially.
I'm sorry about the chickens with the bubbly eyes and wet sneezes on the thread I jumped in on. I would be out of my mind with worry, too, especially with it spreading.

Yes!

Someone local to me!

If you think your are in Northern California, or you just want to chat with us, Post away!

Lurkers welcome!

I think there has been one on the SF Bay Area Craigslist. The last time I noticed it was within the past week, but it isn't there now.. Maybe the listing expired and it will appear again, or maybe you could post a "wanted" listing.

… unless you bought the one that was there and are looking for another one

I'm thinking it was in the Redwood City or San Mateo area, but don't remember the details.

This is the perfect place to post questions like this.

I hope you find one!

Thanks! Yeah, I saw that one on Craig's list, but I didn't move on it fast enough, darn! I'll keep looking =)

Welcome! Do you have chickens now or just preparing for them? I would have considered Davis central CA as a kid, now I'm just over the invisible line at the top of the state.

Thanks. So do you guys think I shouldn't treat unless more symptoms come up besides the wet sounding sneeze?
If there is any bubbly eyes or nasal discharge, then I'd worry. But sneezing in general isn't enough to give them antibiotics- they can sneeze if you change the bedding, or make a sneeze-like sound if they get food stuck in their throats.

Welp, I just went to check on them and one of the hens has bubbly eyes. A ton of little bubbles in both of her eyes. The other two have very wet sounding sneezes, which is not normal for them. The only ones not showing any symptoms are the two Speckled Sussex and the Tolbunt Polish. So, half my flock seems to be sick.
I want to give whatever antibiotic is going to work best, without risking killing them like people have said happens with the injections. I have $56 to my name, that's all I can afford for medication. What do I buy for them? I just want my hens to be better again.

I found the Tylan Soluble powder on eBay from someone with 100% positive feedback for $48 including shipping. It won't be here until June 4th, is that too long to wait?

I need an antibiotic that's approved for poultry because I do sell my eggs sometimes.

Yes, it is too long to wait.

Separate the sick ones, even if you make a pen in the yard out of old wire.

Remember to quarantine new chicks away from the flock for two weeks before integrating them. Bubbles in the eye can be bad.

I have no way to quarantine or separate. The chicken yard is to small to keep them separate, and the only other yard I have is the dog yard, both of my foster dogs want to chase my chickens so that won't work. I really have no other options.

Since that is too long to wait to get the medication, what should I do?? I can't find any store around here that carries it
