California - Northern

We conducted our taste test last night and compared a Bresse cockerel (24 wks) to a Pita Pinta cockerel (19-20 wks). We roasted them with salt, pepper, butter, onion, and celery. Four thumbs up for the dual purpose Pita Pintas!!! They were both very tasty but Monet and I preferred the PP over the Bresse. The Bresse meat was a little chewier but since he was 4-5 weeks older than the PP that might have made some difference in the texture. The Bresse had more dark meat and it was very dark colored. The PP dark meat was only slightly darker than the breast meat. Both had a decent amount of white meat and both were very flavorful. This has almost persuaded me to not build my Bresse flock back up but to stick with my BBS Langshans and my Pita Pintas.
Thank you for the comparison!

It is an hour before lunch and I am getting hungry now....

Me too! I splurged and made mashed potatoes and gravy to go with the roast chicken. Gravy made from home raised chicken is the best in the world! It is the best part, IMO! I am using the carcasses with the leftover meat to make soup for tonight.

On Saturday I made Mystery broth--It looked like Rabbit Bones. I need to start making stuff better for the freezer.

It was the best tasting broth! I made soup out of it and on Sunday, a pot pie.

I currently have 2 broody mamas with 5 chicks each. One group is 2 weeks old and the other group is 1 week old. They spend their nights in a secure grow out pen with sand on the ground and their days foraging in an area shut off from my layer flock. They have vitamins in their water and access to King Freedom starter crumbles. But the mamas find all kinds of things for them to eat including mulberries. The younger group has 3 of the 5 with pasty butt and the older group has 1 out of 5 with it. I've rarely had hen hatched chicks have it and when one does, it only takes 1 or 2 times of cleaning it off for it to go away. These little ones are getting worse. Any suggestions? I did add ACV to one of their waterers today instead of the vitamins.

Check to see if something they are eating could be a cause. It is unlikely though.

Get them a bag of Chick Grit. I buy it at TSC. They carry it during chick season at least. They need good grit if they are eating grains and other tough stuff.

Brentwood Feed has it because I picked up a bag for Chris. I guess that I will need to get a bag for myself! I need pine shavings so need to got out there anyway.

I have a question about chicken colors & their proper names.
I'd love anyone to chime in with their thoughts.
Is this considered a "sport"?
She's a standard polish, white with black flecks & specks.
