California - Northern

Going through Summer photos and found these. I hate - hate - hate having pictures of me taken but my husband took these. They are kind of fun so I thought I'd share. DH followed me out one day with the camera and caught her in action.

I'm not sure I'd trust what they said today, I had to talk to three people before they found one who wasn't telling me they didn't have a FedEx account. :idunno

Fogot to say sorry for your losses. :(

FWIW, I always send mine to the Turlock or Tulare lab, they seem like *maybe* they aren't as busy as the the Davis lab. When I call for free necropsies, I ask to speak with a pathologist and then send the body attn. to that Doctor.

Good news: I set 23 eggs today. 15 Golden Lakenvelders and 8 Lavender Orpingtons.

Bad news: My ex girlfriend lives in Weed. Her house is burned down, one of her rescue's dogs is missing and several cats did not make it out of the house.
Happy for you and the eggs!

The rest is devestating.

I am heartbroken for my ex girlfriend and her family right now. This is what remains of their home.

They had about one minute to evacuate with as many of their animals as they could get. They run an animal rescue and were not able to get every animal out alive. Two dogs and several cats are missing. They are in DESPERATE need of foster homes for dogs/cats. All dogs are cats are friendly with other dogs/cats. They lost everything, they did not even have time to grab clothes.
If you can help in any way - fostering an animal, donating money, clothes, etc. please do. You can find information including their cell phone number, PayPal email address, and the address where they're living on these pages:

I'm donating 4 pairs of pants, a pair of boots, 4 shirts, and whatever else I can find. I'm also going to foster a cat for them. If you can help at all it would be greatly appreciated...they've dedicated their lives to saving animals and now they've lost everything.

This is so sad. I cry thinking about the people and the animals being terrified and hurt and worried. I am so sorry for your loss!
That's really odd...sorry to hear about your babies. I would definitely send a few in to Davis, I think that's a good idea. I overnight my birds to UCD.
I would also tell the breeder what has happened to see if he or she is 1. willing to replace the babies if necropsy shows that it was something that went wrong on his/her end, and 2. so that he/she is aware of the problem & can tell you if they've been having the same problem at their place or not.

I found it odd as well. I had good luck as far as receiving healthy hatchery chicks when I used to order from them..I think I have received 33 chicks from MPC and Privett and the only loss was an Australorp baby from MPC who didn't last the first 24 hours. The chicks from breeders or from my own birds have never been sickly. I feel really fortunate that we don't seem to have Cocci in the area. I don't even do medicated starter. Babies start out with fermented 22% turkey grower from when they first start to eat I think that helps them to stay healthy

I love these...It is so funny how we get pictures in our heads of our on line acquaintances. Then we see a photo or meet them in person and learn the real thing is so much better. Your expression in the last shot is beautiful...She is a very funny girl.

All of the BYC people I have met in person have had lovely, happy peaceful faces. I think the birds contribute to that :)

Hmm... I bought 8 chicks from a local breeder. Five have died within the first day or two. I think I'm sending in a few to Davis just for peace of mind. I just need to call and get the FedEx account number in the morning, since we only have a drop box in town.
Oh no! It wasn't the quail was it?

Love these picture! I only have one that is this tame. She is the one with the missing foot so she has incentive to be friendly. Her hatchmate was as friendly as her but seems to be getting less so since she has been hanging out with the other Mottled Ameraucan project girls...

Well, eating and milling about the brooder.

Hopefully they'll do well. I had chicks get sick. It ended up being egg yolk sac infection. They were almost 2 weeks at the time.
I took them to the turlock extension for necropsy. I'd bet money it is that . You can lose some due to shipping conditions, but not usually that many.
Contact the breeder. They will work with you

I got my first chicken and supplies from Mill Valley Chickens. I read on their website, and the owner's little daughter also told me, that scratch is like potato chips for chickens, and they should not get too much of that treat. Well, I didn't have much of a problem their, because chicken scratch seemed to be one of their least favorite foods.

I've been keeping the chicken scratch in a plastic bag in a galvanized trash can. I'm not careful about the plastic bag and it stays open sometimes. Today I found that the bag was infested with weevils. My chickens ignore ants, so I didn't think they would be interested in weevils. It seems that they can't get enough of the weevils. I left out the bag of scratch, and, for the most part, the chickens ignore the grains and pick out the weevils. The Australorp is the one that eats as many as she can find, but I've also seen the Welsummer and Crested Cream Legbars pecking at them.

just a fyi on the fire. For everyone that loves the Crystal Basin area.
Ice House , Union Valley , Stumpy Meadows , Loon Lake

the forest around Stumpy Meadows is gone , Ice House and Union Valley are likely next

I am sick with sadness
