California - Northern

Took a few pics yesterday

This game went on and on like the slide in kindergarten, They hopped up from behind her slid down the front ran round behind and got in line again...I could have watched for hours but the rowdy bunch went back under
I'd be interested to know if all of your chicks joined in the fun and games, or just specific ones.
And then I'd be interested to know what their gender turns out to be.

So far, cockerels seem to like that game around here...

ps super cute chicks and sweet momma

That is normal. Sometimes they get surprised by the feeling of the egg coming and don't make it back into the nest box in time. She'll figure it out and get it in the nestbox.
None of my others did it more that twice. Im affraid she is making a habit of it.

There is usually a reason--low on the pecking order or some other issue going on. Sometimes it does take them some time to get it all figured out.

Sometimes a pullet will not like the nest so adding different nesting materials or even darkening it will help. Sometimes moving the nest box helps too.

I have been away for about a year and I'm hearing rumors about the "annual" party in Modesto April or May. I plan on making it this year if there is one and I'm looking for some Copper Marans eggs or chicks. Also a couple of super productive light brown egg layers. I also plan of attending the Fresno Poultry show Feb 28th. Thanks

Crazy hatch
I cannot figure this out! I collected and set all eggs myself. Except for the Pinta Pinta eggs, the daddy should have been my Splash Marans roo. There is a slight chance that my Blue Mille Fleur Bantam Cochin roo fertilized somebody but I moved him two weeks before I started this test hatch, so that should have been out of the girls’ systems! Here is my chart, with who the egg came from, and when it hatched out. Highlighted in blue are what I thought would come & what has come out. The other two are what I thought was coming out.

Issues:
#1 No Splash chick, unless the lightest blue is really Splash, in which case it’s the darkest splash chick I’ve ever seen or had in the past 4 years!
#2 Where on earth did this golden chipmunk chick come from?? Chick EE was the only one that hatched in the old Brower incubator, so that was pretty clear it was what I expected.

In order as on the excel spreadsheet:
Not Splash in my book!

WHAT???

Any thoughts? So baffling!

Maybe CCL genes asserting themselves ?

I had to share a pic of the largest egg that I've ever gotten from my chickens. I had at least 1 girl working overtime last week. I collected 3 big double yolk eggs but 1 of them was 102 grams! The other 2 were 81+ g each.

Wow! That's a BIG one!

thank you ron...I bought some chicks and a 4 month old chicken and I want to send in one of the chicks that didn't make it through shipping and want to take blood from my new pullet as well as some of my own.

I lost a chick last night too. It was the second OEGB to hatch & just never seemed to do great. I think it burned up too much energy hatching. It didn't learn to eat the chick starter & all the electrolytes didn't help when it's internalized yolk ran out, I guess.
Survival of the fittest I suppose...

At least the other 12 are doing really well & growing like crazy.
I think one of the silkies may be a frizzle. :)
So sorry you both lost chicks......

Thought I'd share an update - looks like my injured chick is going to make a full recovery

Yeah! Great news!

Well, first storm since the chooks went out into the coop is rolling in. They're clearly on edge. When one gets flighty and bolts into the coop/run, they all follow. Then they stand around looking confused before trooping back out into the yard.

I also noticed that Phoebe has moved up in the hierarchy. She now trumps mean girl Babs. She totally pushed Babs aside for mealworms this morning and Babs submitted.
It does take the a while to adjust to change, Min don't seem phased by the rain much. They come and go from the covered area, When I went to lock them up last night all were dry except one........and she looked like she had been swimming! They were all fine this morning though.

I am sorry i am from Nigeria and (with no offence)i thougt this sight is used to elighten each other on poultry rearing.
Welcome Muhammed! We do try to share our experiences about chickens here and help each other out with problems. Anyone is welcome no matter where they are from. Feel free to join the conversation!

I got my first 8 egg day every one of my original 8 chickens laid today. Now if the 2 new ones would just start eating the feed and start laying again I could look forward to a 10 egg day.

And I have a people buying my extra eggs too so they are paying their feed bill. Today is a great day
The last 3 days of eggs

Great production! And good example of muddy eggs from the rain!

Here are pics of my broody breaking bantam babies...Assorted feather legs SR. I think I got a mix of Cochin and Brahma. It would be fun to read any guesses/predictions on future coloring.

There are two little mottled looking ones like this

Two with black backs creamy bellies and silvery grey in between like this

Mama Stella so happy to get off the air and on to the chicks.

And Two Wild Type but in Silver and Black with creamy white faces

Love to hear any feed back you may have! Thanks
Adorable!! I am starting to lose my resolve not to start hatching yet!

Welcome back! Hope you are able to make the party. It's a little too far away for me though. I can't drive that far...

@ronott1 Are your PPs starting to lay yet? Just wondering when I should start anticipating them. I have no idea where I am on your list though....

Ron I may need Pitas from you too as they might be the only diversity we get for a while.

I would really like a couple of pullets so I could get started with my boy this year but if Chicks are the best we can do.

Im sorry I missed you when I went up to Kims it would have been great to see you then.
