I have a concern, I have been letting my hens out for the better part of the day.... the last few days we had bad weather so I didn't let them out... today we were out with them and I checked their food abdominal water.... to my surprise, the one Feeder was empty, I guess they had to eat their food because they couldn't get out.... So now what? Are they getting enough nutrients eating outside? Should I keep them in more?
Also, laying pellets only have 16% protein, I'm going to get laying pellets when we go to town.... I was just thinking that higher protein would be better...
It is worth a try to save it!well its finally happened. My young chickens keep flying up on the fence and getting up on the dog pen roof. One finally ended up where the dogs could get to it.
It has most of the feathers off its back and one puncture mark. My husband said the wing is broken. should we try saving it?
We have it in a dog kennel and it hasnt been drinking on it own. I am picking up some antibiotics and vetericyn for it.
These chickens sure fly around alot. Even with their wings clipped.
any advice is welcomed. I am in Stockton, Ca

In the last 4 weeks the topic of broken wing has come up with 2 separate owners. One had to amputate the Breda juvenile's wing and keep it clean to retard infection but the pullet has no balance with part of one wing gone and can't be kept outdoors with the flock because the roo is over-mating her and she is getting beaten up. She has to be kept indoors as a house-pet or found a therapy organization home as a therapy animal for hospital/senior center educational visits.
Another owner went to the vet and their Leghorn also had to have a wing amputation.
My suggestion is a vet visit to assess the damage on your chicken's wing before any infection starts and to treat or splint appropriately for the type of wing injury.
