California - Northern

Came home tonight to 6 dead chickens. 3 hens, 3 roosters. All prime, 6 month old, healthy, sweet, beautiful birds. Dead because people are idiots and can't contain their dogs.
I'm so sorry. I hope this is the end of your issues with the dog.

Well, my great chicken day didn't end so well.....we were working on one of the coops most of the day, then I sat and watched chicken tv. Went in to finish the lasagna and get our own dinner going and when my husband went to put everyone to bed, the little Marans cockerel was missing! Can't find the little guy anywhere! Last I saw the three they were with several of the other chickens on the olive orchard side of the coops. Something must have got him right as it was getting dark although I can't find any feathers, he was small enough to be carried off. Out of 6, 3 lost to black mold and one to predators.....these last two better make it!
I hope he turns up - they can be tricky as heck to find after dark. I do know (unfortunately from experience) that foxes and bobcats leave NO feather trail - just *poof* gone. Hawks usually leave a huge feather circle pattern.

Reading through the beginning of this thread about "What is North?" I definetly qualify. Dad worked at ghe inspection stations so I grew up in tiny little border towns like Hornbrook, Dorris, Smith River, Dunsmuir. I'm only 55 miles North of the CA border now.

Is anyone interested in trading BLRW roo? I hatched eggs from shanshan51 and got 4 girls and 1 boy. Great ratio but they all have the same sire. Looking for a young male to put with my girls. i hope to get my daughter to help me get some pictures of him when it stops raining here. They hatched June 1st. To my thinking he is blacked laced but it is more of a charcoal gray than black. He doesn't have the shafting I see in the girls. Not an "in your lap" type bird but he accepts that he is being held and just grumbles about it.

I did get a response from Northern OR but Northern CA is just as close.

I Have a BLRW rooster that I got as a day old chick from Foley's about 2 years ago. He is great with the girls, protective and a good flock leader, but I moved into the city limits and I need to find him a home asap as my neighbor already came to my door to complain ( and he is not allowed under the city rules). He is a beautiful dark blue/ gray color with very nice lacing and I would like to see him go to a good home.

Now in those pictures it does look like a pullet. Must have been the extreme closeup in the other picture.
Yes, that was quite a closeup.

I am not worried about having them turn out to be boys.

Yes! It is great to hear from you and we love pictures here.

PapaBrooder might have some of those.

Bye!

This morning I culled the female pullet that had been struggling with the aspergillus. We discovered the coop roof leaks- yay! So on that today. I am going to process a bunch of chickens today and I am also going to cull Copper (the aggressive young roo we have) unless my family can come up with a good reason for him to stay.

I do have a question though for you experienced chicken people. My young Orpingtons rooster Joe- we gave him a whole day of respite. He was getting heavily picked on by the 2 BCM roosters. And as the drama unfolded- what we thought was sticky pear juice all over his face...was poop. Eww. So he got a bath, a good face cleaning, fresh food and water and even a couple scrambled eggs and a night in the house away from all the rest. We turned him back out this morning but he still is acting low. His tail is never up- it's always down like a German Shepards tail. The hens tolerate him and don't pick on him, he tries to hide in their cluster bunches. When Samson (roo) comes around he gets real still and puts his head down. When the flock moved away- he was left alone and he just stood there. I wouldn't say he looks sick but he is definitely depressed and low. When he was away from the flock he gobbled food but his tail remained low. I am a little concerned that the poop on his face, in his eyes and crammed into his nostrils might have gotten him sick.

I cannot imagine it not- I mean it's poop and crammed into his face for days. :| I do not want to separate him from the flock too much because I am concerned for his safety when he rejoins- they are always mean to 'newcomers'. Do you think it sounds like he may be sick, or depressed or is this classic low man in the pecking order? He seems really sad. I don't mean to humanize it either- literally the flock will be in one spot and he is off on his own. I don't know what to do. What would you do?
