CALIFORNIA The Whole State thread

Sorry I have been AWOL again. Just can't shake different times of the year. The 3rd was my birthday and the 4th would have been Bill's. Doesn't seem how much time goes by, I just seem to have meltdowns.

The show was nice. I didn't win anything, but still enjoyed myself. Did a lot of wondering and it was so nice to see old chicken friends. BTW Karen. I'm holding or on the OEGB roo for right now. I need to replace the nicest Black Sumatra roo I've ever had. I think he had a hear attack. Tried to chase him down when he got out and he flew over the fence to a neighbor's yard and their dog started chasing him. It was a mess. The dog never got hold of him, but buy the time I got to when he hit, he was limp and died a few minutes later. So mad. I was waiting to take pics as usual and don't have a recent one of him, but he was just really a nice looking bird. Wish my Splash had his tail. So I'll be on a roo hunt. I hate when it's a roo I have to look for. Most times I'm trying to get rid of them. Kind of watching a youngster that I'm pretty sure is a pullet and of course that's what I wanted her to be, yesterday I told her if she'd rather be a roo, I was good with that as long as she looked like her dad. I really have to replace that one first.

So I have some pullets that started laying, but nothing from the breeders. Figures LOL .... I heard egg songs just before feed yesterday and went out to a FBCM in the box. I looked in and at first though there was something wrong with her vent and then out popped a little pullet egg. I got one the day before too, so don't know if she's the only one laying then or if both are. They aren't all splotchy like the older hens usually lay in the beginning and if they get darker than they are, I'll be happy. There's a FBCM cockerel out with them. Had to pull the blue AM last month since he's also a flier. Found him out front one day and then he just kept escaping., so he's penned.

Well the thread was moving while I was gone. Let's see if anyone comes back while I'm back...

Almost forgot.

Don't forget we have pages attached to this thread. Some are open to all and some are closed, but I can add you info.

For the breeders page, please copy and paste the format into a pm. Change the info to your own and you need to do one for each breed. Send me a pm with it set and I'll copy and paste it onto the page.

The first page of this thread can not be edited. There are links there to use. If you haven't already, please take a look around and if you have things to add, let me know.

Kim,
My breeder BCMs are not laying yet at all. Aaron is putting in a Fleming roll out nest box in there today. I have the converted 5 gallon bucket box in there now & the used it last year & before but sometimes the finish on the egg gets scratched before I get to them so I am trying this. I bought 3 but the milk crates I attached them to aren't big enough for my Orpingtons so I have to choose a more normal sized bird to use them. I bought some Brown leghorns at the Stockton show just to have a white egg in the egg basket for contrast & I have started getting them.
I was browsing through the 2010 SOP the other day & think I found a new to me breed I have to have. Up until now no one has been able to name a LFDP white egg layer but I was reading about the Crevevours (sp). The SOP list them as Large Fowl Dual Purpose & they lay a WHITE egg............yeah....NOW to find them.....LOL
Ray & I are off to Black Oaks just for overnight for Valentines Day but hope to see a lot of you at the Fresno Show this Saturday.

Crevacours are difficult to find, but I believe Duane Urch has them. If you find some make sure they have RED ear lobes. If they have white earlobes they are not the real deal.

Thank you Walt. I have never ordered from him but will try to find his contact information & call or write to him. I will check for red earlobes before I order.

La Fleche are similar and are a bit bigger in the description. Urch has them too.

Who knows how big the ones Uch has are though?

Ah so sorry Kim!
Thanks kiddo. Now to find something at least close to him. If these hens were laying I'd try and hatch one out from him.

Have a good time! I've never been. I love those big Orps of yours. Nice to see you're adding birds. hehe

So nice to have our fowlman around. Can always count on Walt.

The contact information is in the pdf. Calling is best.
You guys are on this!

Haven't touched my little $3 coop for a couple of days. I'm adding a loong nest box. It's just so little I had to do something. One thing I didn't realize was that it was lopsided too. Of couse it was. IS. Need to add furring here and there to even it our, before I put it all back together and add the run area under it. I could have built a whole new coop at this point. LOL Need to get some sleep and go buy sand in the morning. Thought I had enough feed for another week and ended up being empty buckets. I have no idea why. I just took it out there a few days ago. Maybe someone is stealing it around. Anyway, that's another run to:hmmnly thing I really got done all day was filling feeders and dumping sprouts into tubs. I want to see if I have get it to really grow this time. Wish I had land so I could grow enough to last. Might have to wait and see what happens with this drought for that.
