Call Ducks Finally Hatched

Sooooo, I got my FIRST call duck egg today!!!!!! Yippee!!! Do I bring it inside or is it OK to leave it until tomorrow at least to see if I get another one??? Can't wait to see if they are fertile!! It's either from my grey pair or my blue fawn pair, or the east indie hen!!!

Congrats. If I'm going to incubate I bring them inside, date them and put them in an egg carton that I rotate from side to side 3 times a day. I collect the egg(s) every day for 7 days and then I put them in the incubator. Right now I have 3 fertile that are due next week, 3 that I put in yesterday and 1 in an egg carton that I collected this morning. Good luck with yours. Fingers of fertility crossed :)

Awesome thanks!!! What do you use to date them?

I did bring it in, when I checked it a couple hours ago it was not warm so no one is sitting on it. Although I guess if they were going to sit they would wait until they had a whole bunch?

Not sure what got them laying. They've nested for 3 days now. Last night just for the hell of it I put a golf ball in the nest. Not sure if that made a difference or if they were going to lay anyways!

Also, my blue fawn and snowy male have been fighting NON STOP for the past couple days!!' Is that normal during mating season? It's mainly the blue fawn attacking the snowy.

I would assume that they wouldn't sit until they had a few but with our weather being so sporadic here I haven't let mine keep any yet.

Not sure about the fighting. Mine don't fight. Sometimes they will bow their heads at each other and quack but the girls do it too.

Oh and I use a pencil to date mine. Some use magic marker but I'd rather stay on the side of caution and pencil works fine for me.

Lol. Why didn't you just get some from Vera?

Just trying to get some different bloodlines. I'm still not sure if I can keep any. My main theory (which sometimes works and sometimes doesn't) is that if I buy enough, and hatch them out, my dad won't be able to keep saying no to chickens. Ha, however, just in case that doesn't work I'll send them to Vera. So at Least this way they will be different bloodlines so she could keep some!

This other lady has blue, black, mottled, splash. I have no idea what those colors are but sounded good to me, ha.

Lol. Makes sense. I've never been partial to the solid black chickens but like the blue and splash. Love the mottled though. I have 4 mottled babies in the brooder now that I hatched last week. They are just adorable. The other 5 in the brooder are mille duccles

Oh my gosh they are adorable!! One of Vera's Wcb polish chicks pipped and died today. Ugh. It looks like it hit a vein and drowned itself. :( another one is pipped and is chirping super loud. Bet I wake up to chicks tomorrow!!

Also, I got TWO call duck eggs today!! So two of my girls are laying :)

Awww. How sad. Hate it when things like that happen. Hope all the rest make it out safely. I have a couple of mille cochin that I got from Lori going into lock down tonight and then 5 more of the mille duccles that I got from Vera that will be joining them in lockdown on Thursday. Next Monday I have my first 2 call eggs going into lock down and then about 17 seramas next Thursday. The following week I have about 4 dozen cochins, silkies, polish, silver penciled wyandottes and another call egg going into lock down. I'm still collecting call eggs and polish eggs this week to go into the incubator this weekend. Going to be crazy around here for next few weeks lol.

Congrats on your calls starting to lay. YAY!!! My buff girl is doing all the work herself right now lol. Wish my other girls would get their butts in gear lol. All in their own time though I guess :)

I'm going out to Harmony on Friday afternoon so will call your friend back to see if she wants me to bring the calls with me.
