Call Ducks Finally Hatched

Muscovies and calls aren't genetically compatible. Muscovies can only breed with other muscovies; all other domestic breeds are mallard-derived.

Oh ok. They should breed a mini muscovy then!

Okay, good news and bad news...the good news is, all 3 of the eggs in the Rcom mini are developing! The bad news is, while I was out, there was a temp spike in the backup bator...there was only one fertile egg that I knew of in there, but I can't find the embryo in that one anymore. I'm giving it two more days until I toss it, but I'm pretty sure it's gone. God, why did I have to run errands today? UGH, I'm so mad at myself right now! It was fine before I left...I should have stayed home. I monitor the temps like a hawk when I'm home.

Ah don't beat yourself up. You can't monitor them 24/7, so it could have happened any time. And maybe it will be ok! We'll keep fingers crossed...

I'm sorry. I monitor the temperature like crazy as well. Mine keeps going from 101 to 99 then back to 101. The reason being, cause I keep trying to tamper with it to where it stays at 100. I guess I would rather it be 101 than 99 though, so I'm going to stop tampering with it now. How high did the temp get up to with yours?

Well, it still compounds my original problem, though. Realistically, of these three, only one or two will hatch. If one hatches and it's a male, I'm screwed. If two hatch and one's a female, I'm still sorta screwed because it's cruel to separate a single duckling to be raised alone. But I can't keep all three, especially if the second one is a male. If by some stroke of insane good fortune all three hatch then everything will be okay, I can keep one and still have a nice healthy pair to rehome. But let's face it, these are shipped call duck eggs, the chances of that happening are pretty darn slim.

I have three thermometers in there, two read 105 and another 108! I think it's safe to say they're cooked. I'm just hanging onto them for a couple more days out of blind hope or outright denial, I guess.

I put the best-looking ones in the rcom. The one confirmed live one in the still-air bator had a saddle-shaped air cell, so its chances were slim anyway. But I have a feeling all six eggs were fertile. Both of the blank eggs in the rcom developed veining today, so for all I know they were all viable when I started incubating. I'm just really upset over this. I am never, ever, ever using a still air incubator again! The only reason I bought it in the first place was to maximize my hatch rate or to at the very least keep the other three as standbys in case one of the rcom eggs quit. So much for that plan. :/

Say it! I am with you! I definently think on the front page on the front page of BYC the first thing it should say is DONT BUY A CHEAP STILL AIR BATOR!!!! I think if anyone want to hatch call they HAVE to do it in a forced air either homemade or expensive bator. No cheap stryafoam or still air! Well at least you still have three. I was going to say you could just send the duckling back to me if its a male..... but you arent npip.
