This is Fern. We adopted her an her son Felix to keep our barn cat company. She is an amazing hunter, and when she could go outside, she would bring back 1-3 little animals a day. We had no idea where she was getting the animals, we just knew she liked to cross the road and go down a tiny private driveway right across from our house.
A few months ago, Fern went missing. We assumed a predator had taken her, but then the rescuer we got her from contacted us saying Fern was listed in the local Humane Society. We were overjoyed that Fern was alive and well! She got to run around the property again, and of course, she went across the road.
The next day, a guy from across the street comes over saying he had seen Fern again, even though he had trapped her and taken her to the Humane Society! He explained she had been terrorizing him for months, catching animals and trying to break into his garage and shop, so he trapped her, without even letting us know what she was doing 😡.
Now Fern has to stay inside the barn. We harness trained her and we take her on walks, but she can't just go outside anymore because we can't stop her from crossing the road. If anyone knows how I can keep her on my property, those tips would be very appreciated!

Here's Fern (the one laying down), with her son Felix and friend Barley (he is no longer with us 😭)

Fern and Felix were born at a cat hoarders house, and Fern was malnourished (which is why she is so tiny). They were rescued while Felix and his siblings were still kittens. When all of Felix's siblings were old enough to leave Fern, they did and were adopted out, but Felix didn't want to leave Fern. The rescuer decided to adopt them out as a bonded pair because Felix would get really sad when he was separated from Fern.

I love tuxedos, I have a big fat 18 pounder😎

When we purchased our house, we discovered that the previous, previous owners had left their aging cat to live at that house. We learned that her name is Shiva and this year she is about 17 years old. She’s a freaking monster I tell you. She’s brought us mice, small birds, shrews, RATS, rabbits and somehow SOMEHOW brought us two flying squirrels. She’s super sweet and cuddly to people though.
My other barn/rescue cat got stolen by my neighbor :/

My third and final participant in this thread, lol. This is Jojo. He is a very large tuxedo cat who enjoys hunting snakes, rabbits both full size and baby, deer mice, and termites. He brought home a huge rabbit once, chewed its back legs off, and then went off in the woods to hunt more 🤮 he is my husband's little minion and I catch them sharing pudding, cake, and other kinds of junk food together 😬

I adopted four rodent control cats last year, and I think they're all still here. These cats were so feral that even the cat rescue couldn't tame them so they offered them as barn cats. They like people about as much as I like cats, so we get along just fine, and every so often I catch a glimpse of one. I named the hissing, spitting things after hurricanes and let them loose on the rodent population. They are Hurricane Camille, Hurricane Dorian (the only male), Hurricane Rita, and Hurricane Cat-Trina. Camille will occasionally let me get a glimpse of her when I bring dinner, but the others wait until I am out of sight.

They kill rodents, all right. Tarantulas, too. Now I have to figure out how to get the rodent blood stains off of stone and concrete. Not sure I want to google getting blood stains off of cement floors, though. Somebody might show up at the door....

Aww, cute kitties!

These are my working cats, both named Gat. They were left at our house in the country as babies when we lived on another continent. We fed them and gave them shelter in bad weather and our little dogs raised them. They have windsurfed off of roofs and ended up with a split paw here and there, but had plenty of room to roam and be cats. When we moved, there was no way we could leave them behind. They were very sad to be inside cats for about 2 years before we moved to a house with an old barn and more rodents than they'll ever be able to eat. They could barely believe their good luck! They snuggle like house cats in the evening as they will usually come home at night.

My only complaint with them is that they prefer bunnies and squirrels to mice and moles.

After a hard day's work...

One of the two is on house arrest recovering from a near escape out of something's teeth. The skin on her backside is growing back over what was open muscle. She argues with me every morning about how she's totally recovered and I remind her that playing with coyotes/foxes/coons is a breach of contract and she is grounded until she can prove to me that she's recovered... she's impatiently waiting to get back on duty. These girls are the best cats we've ever had.

Edit to add one more:

You can just see the cat up in this tree robbing a nest and no amount of me telling her to come down was going to stop her. I'm amazed at how they can be wild and sweet all in the same package.

I love this- and there’s actually a way you could help these babies and their mom! If you have the ability, you could rescue these babies and bring them to a foster family (not a shelter, they could be euthanized) spay the mother and release her back where she came from. This would save the life of this mother cat and the kittens!
