Calling all Penedesencas Owners/Breeders

Josh,

Thanks for complimenting the girls. As far as raising, them, it is a possibility, but I will have to see about getting more birds this spring. We have to build more pens, as well. If this thread keeps going, maybe we can all exchange some stock for diversification of lineage.

I'm still surprised how much I like them.

My Penedesencas have been laying for about a Month so far.
I am getting 1-3 eggs a day, out of 2 hens and 2 pullets. I' d probably get more But our weather
is not all that great. It's raining, cloudy, muddy, and cold.
I am sure they are missing the warm sun and fresh grass. Being all penned up doesn't help egg flavor or production.

I want to say they layed for about 3-4 months strait after I bought them, then
BAM!!! They started molting I finally getting eggs, and they are getting Darker every day.

Honestly, I want to say I am getting about 3-6 maybe 7 on the marans egg chart from my hens.
I'd post pics but I don't know how.

Someone tell me what this is (roo/hen).... I have a thread started but seems like I should ask here too.

I know it is a wheaten penedesenca... just not the sex. Also, who is breeding them? I would possibly like to buy some more.

Ohh. you are!?!? Let me ask, are they nearly as flighty as everyone says? (I'm taking note of your screen name)

Yes and no. They are not flighty if I'm just working around them, feeding, cleaning, collecting eggs. If I try to CATCH them, yes, they are fast. The young stock I have raised are much, much more easygoing than the breeders I bought at POL. I don't hold and pet them, but I'm in with them a few times a day, moving them around, feeding, watering, cleaning and they are fine, not silly at all. They don't mind being caught any more than any other young birds. I don't mind the "flighty" part of them, since I'm not likely to step on one by accident

Here are some of my young Pene's a few days ago, with me standing right next to their feeder. This was taken right after I finished catching and banding each one, so they should have been much more upset~LOL

Do the Wheaten Penedesencas as chicks color up the same as the Wheaten Marans? If that was a Marans chick the pullets stay the lighter color like in the wings of the chick pictured, the cockrels are darker colored, if it was a Marans chick pretty sure it would be a pullet, at a month old you know for sure with the Marans, I'm guessing a pullet, so will be interesting to see what it looks like close to a month old. Look forward to seeing an update of your chicks picture after a couple weeks for sure.
