Calling all Penedesencas Owners/Breeders

Just wanted to say hi. I've been lurking to learn more about this breed. I'd like to get some when my current flock is getting too old to lay. Since I'm in AZ too I've been researching breeds that do well in the heat and penes keep coming up. I've only seen them offered on Craigslist once here. Not sure why when they should be much better than Marans or Welsummers, the "other" dark egg layers, here in our extreme heat. I'm looking forward to getting some penes in the future.

I do have a question I've not read the answer to on this thread. Are Penedesencas able to be shown?

No, they have not been accepted into the APA. Jason wants to work on getting them in. They can be shown I think in the General category and that helps get them into the APA.

There are some big requirements but it can be done. Black is accepted under the Spanish Standard.

The biggest Problem is that many descriptions call them flighty and that they do not stand confinement. These descriptions are written by people that have never raised them, Right George? @gjensen If they could not be confined then they would not have been a major source of eggs in Spain. Some people just don not think very well I suppose.

I have three pullets in a ware chicken hutch with a little run. I carry my Rooster Brand out to the pen each Afternoon and take him back each night to his hutch in the Garage. He jumps up onto my hand too.

I can't legally have a roo in my city, but I know two people here that keep their roos indoors and only bring them out for breeding so the neighbors don't complain. It's way too hot here to keep a rooster in a un-airconditioned garage, so they cage them in the house.

They stay in the Garage because I live in town.

The Garage in not too hot because of it's location in the house. It faces East and is under a second story. I do have a fan and will crack the garage door on the hottest days.

yes the standard is in there. I got that Standard from Dr. Francesch who saved the breed in Spain.
I would call them more skittish than flighty as they do not fly . They follow me around the chicken runs but like to keep a 5 foot or so distance. some are less skittish than others.
we would like to see them accepted one day. I had recently rehomed most of my breeding flock to make way for the youngsters so I am down to a trio of crele and black adults.
I have numerous black penedesenca youngsters growing up along with white empordanesa.
I have some crele but no where near as many as I had hoped would hatch so I will not have a lot of them for awhile.
My white empordanesa adult hens I just rehomed where laying extremely dark eggs they where very nice. hopefully the 12 hens or so I am growing out will lay as dark.

The only bird I've lost to heat was a Welsummer.

Sill, it's good to see others in Maricopa County with an interest in Penedesencas. Like you, when I searched for the heat hardiest chickens, the Penes kept showing up in my searchers. While it's been frustrating trying to get some, I haven't yet given up hope. Maybe this winter will be the ideal time to try.

Luckily I live in Gilbert on one acre in a county island, so we have lots of space and no livestock restrictions.

Nice to find a county island! Let me know when you find some Penes. I'm thinking this winter too, I'll have to cull a few of my oldest hens then and will need replacements. At least then we can get hatching eggs or chicks shipped without worrying about the heat.

I'm on the western corner of maricopa county myself (Tonopah) and still working on trying to get a source on hatching eggs. I saw an ebay auction this week from Illinois for wheatens and partridge but there's no way in hell I dare trying to ship eggs when the 10 day forecast is slated to be over the 110s.
