I wanted to let you know I hatched 5 beautiful barnies today from Eagle2026's eggs. They're beauties and my barnie-craving buddy is going to love them. They are huge and vigorous chicks.

I ordered 5 chicks for April

which includes 1 Barnevelder. Also getting 2 Speckled Sussex, 1 Barred Rock and 1 Amerucauna (probably an EE). I read Barnevelders are supposedly very docile --do you think she will be OK with the other breeds I am getting or should I see if I can get 2 to be friends? I really only want 4-5 birds to start as we are in the suburbs. Also, how well do they lay? Are they broody often (I am not looking for broody hens prefer they keep laying)? Thanks for your input!

Some of their eggs. I was concerned about the blunted small end but am told it's normal for Barnies

They were going to be second to my Salmon Favs, but are so friendly they have become #1. The roos are quite loud compared to my elder Silkie & Hamburg roos, but they keep much kinder hours.
I'm so excited, I shipped my first eggs yesterday at 1630 (the girls were laying daily until I offered to take some to the Stockton show; it has taken them 3 weeks to lay 6 eggs close enough together to ship out fresh enough to hatch), and they got there at 0700!
Now I pray

that they got there intact!

Fluffy, Barnies ARE nice people. I spent very little time with mine due to the time of year I got them, but they are pretty docile and quiet. I can't wait till they start to lay.

I read in a chicken book that the females have darker chests--brownish gray-- than the fellows. Anyone know if that's true?

I wanted to post pictures of some of my birds and eggs and see what everyone thinks.The leg color is not the orangy/yellow I have seen on really good Barnies so tell me what you think.I don't think they are ready for the show ring but they look really nice running around my yard to me.

Partridge Penedesencas on the left... I'm thinking 1 pullet 1 cockerel, but this is a Barnie thread so ignore them, lol
I'll get better pics later, but for now, any opinions on gender?
I'm so pleased with this hatch. Just added the one egg since the hen I want chicks from practically laid it in my hand. She likes my straw storage are best of all for laying, NOT the straw I put in her nest box.

As for lacing, here is a picture of one of mine that I got from C. Ledford. The lacing is really good on her birds. Julie Gabbard's birds have good lacing too. I've seen some so called Barnevelders that don't even come close to double laced or are so mossed that they look like a Welsummer or partridge rock/wyandotte. Not even close to breed standard.
