Aww thats adorable!

This is my first chicken experiance and i have a great variaty of chicks im so exitrd thwre doing great

I have 1 porcelin duccle 1 mille fluer 2 mottled cochin 2 barred rocks and 1 buff brahma as well as 5 buff and 1 white silkie! All of those are bantams and then i have a standard leghorn

Do you ever ecounter silkies with missformed feet? Ill post pics one is really weird but is thd fastest some how!
I haven't yet... but I did see someone selling show and pet quality chickens according to their ad. It said the pet ones didn't have the correct amount of toes.

I do find the 5 toed feet to be kinda weird in general.

Have you looked at making a chick sandal to correct that? Not sure if that's exactly what it's called. But a quick search on here might turn something up.

There should be no problem at all mixing chicks only a week apart in age. I have successfully incorporated chicks four weeks apart in age. I'm just sure to provide enough food and water and space for all. I simply monitor them carefully for a while to be sure they all get along. I did have to cull one cockerel who bullied the younger chicks, but I did not intend to keep many cockerel anyway, so it was time for him to go.

Now I have 20+ chickens of all ages free ranging in my backyard. I have 7 adults well over a year, I have three to four month olds, two month olds, and even a passel of three-week old chicks that mama hen brooded. When she went broody I moved her and her eggs into a separate coop where they hatched. After a week I allowed mama to free range the chicks undisturbed by the other hens (but in their sight), at two weeks I let mama decide where she wanted to free-range them. She stayed close to their temporary home for a while, but just this week mama moved herself and her chicks back into the adult coop. The rooster helps mama hen protect them. It's quite amazing and a beautiful sight to see them all out and about together.

The adolescents have a separate coop at night, but during the day they go in and out of the adult coop and "play pen" (a chicken wire run attached to the coop for when I keep the adults in for a day or two if necessary). I don't think this is very unusual. It's mostly a matter of being sure everyone has enough food and space. And being on the look out for bullies. I've been lucky in that regard.

Happy chickening!

I found this looking for advice on mixing Six 4 week old chicks & Six chicks that are a few days old. .
Hope I can get older guys into an extension pen, outside, now that we're pushing the 60's, during the day.

BE CAREFUL! I have had multiple stabs on my legs due to my Roo this year. Most of the time I have a pitchfork, He KNOWS That means trouble...Still, Roosters KNOW How to inflict injury!

Pic of all Chicks Mentioned.
YES, the chick on the Upper L is Fine. Strikes me as odd, a couple of the Leghorns have Black spots.
I've been doing this, free Range for about 5 years now, yet this is the first time I've had more than six. The Walker hound and the Current Roo have me pretty confident, against Predators. Hound Has worked great with NOSY neighbor...LOL!

That's a bit of an age span and could get the fresh chicks a good beat down. At 4 weeks the pecking order is alive and well! Only time will tell.

Your roo sounds to me like he needs a nice long, hot bath... with some veggie aromatics!

Life is too short for mean birds. And who wants to breed aggression forward?

He's only Like that when I shoo or are Near the Hens. I'm on 20 open acres, with a fox that has nabbed a few of my Girls. Coyotes, also. My Hound dog is a huge help, in that department..

They did okay last night. Bigger chicks are in the extension pen, outside, for now.

Appreciate Your Concern. Will check the lil guys when I clean their area, today. They've kept to separate ends of the Trough. Smaller ones keeping nearest the heat lamp..

The bag of Medicated Chick Start isn't very clear....When is it SAFE to give Medicated Chick Start?

After a week my different age chicks are doing alive and well but im not sure how big of an age difference they are maybe a few days apart

The silkies will mix with the others but tend to seperate themselfs and flock by themselfes for some time

I never new chickens could be racist

Its weird my silkies are whitish color and the other white chickens group with them while the darker ones stick with others of the smae color

Its quite funny

Medicated *usually* means has Amprolium in it which is a thiamine blocker that SLOWS the growth of Coccidia which are in every single chicken poo and thrive in warm humid conditions like those created in most brooder settings. It should be OK to use as long as you don't have any water fowl. You should check what the active ingredient is though. And you can probably use it until your next bag of feed. Cocci is not a problem if you keep them clean and dry and make sure there is no poo in the water. However, I do keep the name brand Corid on hand because we have very wet springs and I learned with larger broods my shavings were wetter under neath than they looked on top and had to treat once. Even when using medicated starter, it is possible for your birds to get cocci. So just be aware if you see any symptoms... like standing around sleeping, puffed up, and not coming to food. Usually day 1, if that's what you're feeding is when it's safe.

It's been said... Birds of a feather flock together!

Glad yours are doing well. I have raised up to a 3 week difference so far... and the set up does have much influence. As well... every time I try might be different...

I successfully (so far) adopted Three.. 5 day old chicks to one of my broody's last night!

My LFS won't release before then to ensure shipping survival.

Oh... bring in some dirt or a clump of grass if you haven't already... helps to adjust to your microbes while immunity is still high!
