Can I separate the roost and the nest boxes?

I’m sorry but in my opinion this is way to small for 22 chickens !!!!

Agreed! We got our birds from a local laying farm after their supplier came in an took the birds for harvest. We were told they had 12 or so birds and when they arrived there were 22 of them instead.

I’d build a bigger run or get rid of fifteen or so

You can probably sell the excess birds without much issue right now, people are eager to get chicks and hens for eggs.
