Can You Put Wooden Cooking Utensils In The Dishwasher?

I have wooden but mostly bamboo utensils. I don't use the dish washer largely becuase of how bad the soap smells. Hand dish soap doesn't burn eyes or nose compared to the usual cascade liquid stuff, which I think burns because of the bleach in it. I've seen some wood spoons have like a varnish on them, so maybe some of the high temps/detergent chemicals damaged the varnish?

Never heard of getting sick from wooden/bamboo utensils and all my family use them.

That makes sense, I hadn't considered that. We use Trader Joe's dishwasher powder, which is bleach free (I have an allergy to bleach anyway) and haven't had an issue yet. Although, if it were just Andy and I, I suspect that I wouldn't bother with the dishwasher too much either.

I don't, just instinct though.

Redhen, ME?
Heck, I'm sure you know that I don't know how to run the dishwasher and don't want to learn; however, as far as I know, Anne puts everything into it, wooden or not.

Not if you want them to last. I never put in anything with wood, non-stick coating, measuring cups or anything else with a "painted" surface. Also, some metal ware, like cookie sheets, lose their shiny coating if put in the dishwasher and the labels advise against it.

I've been putting my wooden cooking utensils (and now bamboo) in the dishwasher for about 20 years - ever since we got a dishwasher. Unless they are painted - then they don't go in the DW, which means I almost never use them. I have a "sanitize" option on my DW - seems better on that score than handwashing to me.

I switched to Seventh Generation automatic dishwasher detergent. Not only does it not vent toxic fumes into the kitchen that make me sick, it also doesn't destroy the finish on a multitude of items. When I used Cascade, it ruined pots and pans, glasses, etc. I guess it's made for people that leave crusted on food sitting on dirty dishes for a week, before they put them in the dishwasher. I don't know why else they would make such a damaging product. I also couldn't be in my kitchen while the dishwasher was running. Not to mention my parrot. I've been really happy since I changed.

I like their surface and window cleaner, too. I can use it without fumes being a problem. It's good for me and the parrot.
