I find it's always best to be patient and never candle until at least Day 7, better on Day 10 when there will be little mistaking if there is a chick inside. Until you are very adept at it, you will be confused doing it earlier. This is just something that takes experience. Even after hundreds of eggs hatched, I generally try to wait until a week has passed before I candle mine. Also, handling developing eggs before a week endangers them as connections are being formed that are very delicate at that time.

Ok, I will keep that in mind for next time
Eggs are currently day 20, 2 pips
Two duds, one I dropped, and 4 that made it to lockdown

Someone please help! another egg has pipped but it was on the bottom of the egg so I am afraid it is suffocating but I can’t open the incubator to turn the egg right side up because the other egg in there that made a big hole so I don’t want to get shrink-wrapped. also the water is running low what should I do?!

If the water is low, the humidity will drop....you can open the incubator to move the egg you are concerned about and adjust the water level.......
Happy Hatching! :jumpy

Yup.
:thumbsup

Opening the incubator is unavoidable, even during lockdown. The key is to minimize temperatur/humidity fluctuations when you must open. A couple ideas I find helpful:
  • Use warm (not HOT) water to top up, and the humidity will stabilize again more quickly.
  • Drape a towel or blanket over the incubator and yourself if you need to have it open for a few minutes. If you can make a sort of “tent” it will help the humidity not escape. I’ve even heard of some people using a small humidifier/vaporizer (like you might run if you‘ve got a head cold) inside their “tent”. I think that is an awesome idea.
    • Do you remember building a “fort“ as a kid — with chairs or other objects to hold up the blankets? Think of something like that... but possibly smaller scale.
The “tent” (and vaporizer if you use one) is temporary... remove the towel/blanket & vaporizer in-between the times you open. Do NOT leave it covered all the time.

It‘s not even necessary if all you need to do is add some water, or anything else that will be quick. Most people would call it overkill. I just like the idea of being able to take my time with some tasks... I’m a grade-A klutz. The faster I need to be, the clumsier I am. 🥺
