Chantecler Thread!

I'm located in MN. Do you ship chicks in the spring?

Get the started birds! They are the very best way to found a flock.
.1.
You can see what you are getting.
2.The breeder can advise you better on breeding ideas.
3.And you will be ready to hatch eggs with everyone else next Spring.
Yeah you pay more but it is worth it!!

With eggs or baby chicks:
1.time lost waiting till next Spring
2.time and money growing out your own birds from chicks
3. inability to see quality right away= excess loss from culled birds.

Started birds is a bargain. 3 positives or 3 negatives, take your pick.
Best,
Karen

Not sure if this is the best place to ask, but I would think you all would be best equipped to sex some Chanteclers for me!

I have 5 19 week old White and Buff Chanteclers from Sand Hill Preservation Center. I am fairly certain on the sex of both of the White Chanteclers (the rooster is always crowing...). The buffs however have me confused.

First up the whites:

I am fairly certain this one is a hen

(sorry the body shot isn't so easy to see)

I know this guy is a rooster

Here are the Buffs.

Buff #1

Buff #2

Buff #3 (I feel sure this is a hen)

And a shot of both Buff #1 and #2 .. since they are basically twins to me.

Just as a note, I have never heard any of the buffs crow and they are very timid (there are 5 known roosters with them). They do sometimes stand their ground against roosters, but I have never seen them start it.

Thanks for any help!!!

Your first picture does look like a hen (white) The twin Buffs (1 and 2) both look like boys due to the thin golden saddle feathers I see near their rear end. VERY nice comb on your white cockerel!

Buffs #1 and #2 look very male to me.
Buff #3 is female.
I am jealous! Sandhill sent me only *1* buff when I asked for up to 10, and that single is tiny tiny tiny and female.
So I am still without a buff male.

Feb 23, 2015 - Female on left & Male on right

Both male and female chickens have pointy hackle feathers (neck). The hackle feather of the neck is what the saddle feather on the male looks like.

Unlike the Chantecler breed, there are some chicken breeds (Sebrights come to mind) were both genders are "hen" feathered, so you would not sex a breed like that based on the shape of the back/tail base feathers.

Edit to add more clarification and details...all in the details, eh! LOL

Thanks, that was my best guess, they are just so *embarassing* next to the big white guy. Two less hens in my flock

Thank you for confirming their sex too. When I placed my order with Sand Hill, all the specific Chantecler varieties were already sold out, so I went with an assortment and lucked out! If you were closer I'd gladly give you one of my boys!!

Is this a Chantecler?

Any chance it's a rooster? She is mean, and I can't figure out why. I thought maybe she might be a he. She started by pecking and chasing the younger chickens and our dog, and now she's doing the same to my kids and I.
