Chantecler Thread!

Anybody made the "Chantbar" yet? A barred, auto sexing chantecler?

In David Scrivener's book on Rare Poultry Breeds, he references that the experts referred to autosexing breeds as "mongrels" over "pure breeds" so it may be more prudent to ask questions about "auto sexing" poultry in threads for say, Easter Eggers which are not a recognize breed at all but more of a condition or expression of a single trait...any bird laying a coloured egg other than white is often labelled under the term "EE" or "Easter Egger" whereas there are real chicken breeds like Araucanas or Ameraucanas that lay coloured blue eggs.

So that people understand, you have to have an intent to produce autosexing chickens. The ones I produced are not technically "autosexing" but Barred/Cuckoo Chanteclers because they are simply exhibiting cuckoo/barring in a recognized breed. In the hand of someone else with knowledge and the intent to do just that, quite a simple undertaking BUT with huge outlays of economic resources extended to do the correct cross breedings to make the lines autosexing.

I will let David state (page 252) the major reason why autosexing poultry failed to attract the targeted commercial poultry industry back in the early 1900's:

Sex linked poultry never became an economically viable method and all the Cambars, Legbars, Dorbars, Wellbars, Rhodebars, Hambars...see a pattern forming here

...fell quickly out of popularity...for very good reasons indeed.

Brockbars fell out of existence (1946 to 1950's - these were at least, thankfully just crosses within the Plymouth Rock breed of two of its varieties, so NOT crossbred mutts or mongrels as David mentions

) because they were hard to sex since the red colour made them more difficult to determine, compared to the easier detection properties of the black pigment colour as a base for the pigment interruption genetics to be expressed on.
