Chat room for non religious poultry keepers! :D

Forgot to respond again :th . That's quite a list! Thankfully not absurd, but tiring, I'm sure! Totally unrelated, but would you let a girl sit on eggs during the winter, if she were to go broody? That's for pipd, for some reason the quote didn't...well, quote

Yes, not too bad, just tiring! The worst part of it is just having my hands over my head for so long to get the tarps and shower curtains tacked up out there. But it will all be worth it once we really get cold and the birds all have places to tuck away out of the wind. :love

Hmm, as far as winter broodies go, probably not. It would really depend on exactly when in the winter it happened. We very frequently dip below zero (Fahrenheit, which I believe is the equivalent of below -18° C?) several times and often for days at a time at the beginning of the year, so it's likely eggs wouldn't stay warm enough even under a hen during those spells or would freeze as soon as she took a break. I wouldn't want a hen losing that much condition leading up to that, either, so I would be discouraging broodying in early winter before those cold snaps as well. And with everyone crowded into the coop to stay out of the snow, it probably just isn't a good idea to add little chicks to the mix during that part of winter anyway. Afterward, say late February or after when the spring warm up is due to happen fairly soon, is a maybe, all depending on if the birds I actually want to hatch from are laying eggs, of course. I have to be pretty picky about what I hatch because I really don't enjoy having to eat the birds I watched grow up when no one in the area wants them and I don't have enough space to overwinter them. 😩

Ohhhh lol I guess it was. Idk. Someone else had a question mark last time too 🤣🤣🤣

Haha, yes, that was me--and for the same reason! 🤭

I’m eating so healthy now lol I bought sliced apples, baby carrots, sweet potatoes, blueberries, plus little snack packs with cheese, nuts, and fruit. Zero sugar drinks (Gatorade and lemonade and mango passion juice). Keto bread. Etc. I did get some regular bread and some everything bagels to make breakfast sandwiches but I’m limiting myself.

That's good!! I've been working really hard on my diet this year as well (not as in actually dieting, but just in general developing better eating habits) and have lost a lot of weight and felt better than I had in a long time. 😁

Seems logical. That's really cold! The worse we get is -1 maayyyybe -2 (°C) at nightmare two weeks in February, usually. Don't know what I'll do then. I too wouldn't like them sitting when it's so cold, but I feel like Cruella will have other plans

Me too. I've lost ten pounds that have been hanging around my hips, and good riddance! I will have to really WORK to keep them away this time of year. Because when they come back in the winter, they bring friends! :tongue

It's not just about weight though... I'm trying to be more aware of added salt and sugar and other junk in my food. I won't get preachy about this... I feel a bit hypocritical because I still drink diet pop (soda).

Ah okay that makes sense!!

And thanks!! And good luck with your healthy eating too.

Thanks!! And I drink diet soda too. Well, Coke Zero and Pepsi Zero (hate the diet versions especially Diet Coke) and stuff like zero sugar lemonade and juice which probably still has bad stuff in it. And I did buy a few Chef Boyardee. The only bad thing I bought. But they’re quick and easy and and… 😭🙈 I will say though that I put the lemon Bundt cakes back and didn’t grab the Reese’s I was eyeing so that’s good lol

Cruella, girl! Winter is not for babies!! 😩 Thankfully, even my crazy broodies seem to know it's not a good idea to brood during our winters.

How is the latest Cruella brood doing, by the way? Been thinking about them! :pop

I've done winter broodies. Strongly dont Reccommend. Granted it's even colder here, but it effing sucks and they don't grow well at all withh the cold and stress put on their little bodies

Oof, I guess that didn't even cross my mind, either. Yeah, while you definitely get colder there, that does not sound like an ideal situation even with our temps here. 🥶

No, I'm with you on all of that! A couple close family members were diagnosed with diabetes not that long ago and it kind of lit a fire under my butt to start taking care of myself better than I had been. That and my sister. I hate to say she's an inspiration to me because of this, but... she kind of is in a way. She doesn't really take care of herself at all, to the point where she now can't get up and do things when she wants. I could see myself spiraling in that direction for the couple years after Covid and I never want to reach that point, so I've been working as hard as I can to go back the other direction now.

The holidays definitely make that tough, though! Got to avoid all the seasonal treats that come out this time of year. Sweets are definitely my biggest weakness. 😅 Thankfully I had already cut out soda entirely years ago and only really drink water anymore, so that wasn't a battle I had to fight now.

Baby steps! If you try to make too many changes at once, you're far more likely to fall back into bad habits again. Just try to change little things at first, like replacing one soda with water or one junk food item with a veggie or fruit every day, stuff like that. Then you can build up more of those little changes over time. 🙂 It is good that you didn't fall for the temptation for those sweets!

Thanks!! That’s a good point. And yeah I REALLY wanted them but didn’t.

Good for you!

I think a lot of my good health is due to genes -- ie, luck -- but I have had some lessons-by-example too, in my family. The "don't do this" kind of lesson, or you'll end up like my sister/dad/etc. Same thing with some of my friends and neighbors, teaching by example, even if they don't realize it.

As I sometimes tell people, you get one body. Take care of it, because it is DANG expensive to fix it, and replacement parts -- if they are available -- usually don't work as well as original issue.
