Cheryl's Hen House...

How's the plastic panels holding up @TerryH
 ......any more new layers?

Plastic is holding up perfectly. Amazing difference in the run just keeping the wind at bay. Egg production has slowed with the winter sun. Occasionally there are 3 eggs but I'm not sure which 3 it is or if perhaps all of them are laying. Kinda tough to figure out anything when Cheryl and I both go to work in the dark and come back home in the dark. I dislike winter.

Quote: Good news!....yes, the wind makes a huge difference.
Was glad to get the snow cleared before it picked up today.

The 'Dark Season' can be the pits for sure.....only 8 days until Winter Solstice!!

I thought you only had one laying....I must be falling behind.
Well, get your headlight out and got check some butts,
if you really want to know who is laying and who is not.

Vent Appearance:
Dry, tight, and smaller - usually not laying.
Moist, wide, and larger - usually laying.

Pelvic Points 2 bony points(pelvic bones) on either side of vent:
Less than 2 fingertip widths apart usually means not laying.
More than 2 fingertip widths apart usually means laying.

I'm right above you in Missouri. Saturday high 52, low 9.

The hens will be just fine, its the long stretches in which the temps don't get out of the single digits that can cause problems.

Give them some cracked corn or scratch grain before they go to roost.

I was thinking more about me being in distress than I was about the chickens. lol...

LOL. I hear that too. I was out to the chicken house and back in less than 5 minutes this morning and it was "only" 17 degrees.

My much better half said it must be cold you were only gone 5 minutes. In warmer weather I can easily spent 30 minutes out there before I came in and get ready for work.
