Chicken Breed Focus - Appenzeller Spitzhauben

400

My 7 year old named him buddy, since he follows us everywhere. :)

Very handsome! Looks fantastic for 7 years old! I find my spitzes to be very nosey. Every time I'm out there working on their pen or whatever, they always have to come over to inspect what I'm doing and the materials I'm using for the job. :)

Yea he's a bit nosey but it's kind of cool. His brother is the opposite. Likes to stay away.

Hi! I’ve been reading online various and conflicting opinions as to whether Spitzhaubens do well or not in confinement. What has been your experience?

I have two right now, that are stuck in a 2x7.5 cage along with one bantam cockerel. STILL no feather picking or bloodshed of any kind.

So, rock on Spitz!

They are sweet, a bit flighty maybe, but great personalities.

My spitz have a compartment in a shed that opens to a decent sized pen of net fencing. They could hop out of the fence if they wanted to, but tend to stay within it. In the snowy winter months, their area gets smaller due to the snow and how much I can shovel and they do just fine. They love being outside even in the snow, seeming not to notice the cold. In the summer when I had the pen divided to integrate different age groups, there were a couple that I would find in each others pens, having hopped the dividers, but that's probably just because I need to build more secure dividers. :0 When I had to catch them to put them in their correct pen, they would get upset about being cornered & caught, but shake it off quickly. The ones I spent more time with imprinting as chicks are much more comfortable with being handled.

This weekend as I was cleaning out their house, they wouldn't leave me alone. They had to see what I was doing every step of the way. I had to chase them out a couple times so that I could get it shoveled out. Then they were right back in to inspect the new shavings and rearrange as necessary. Love my spitz. :)
