We currently have 3 laying hens, all about 5 1/2 months old. Our Rhode Island Red and Orpington began laying at 4 1/2 months, and our Speckled Sussex began laying at 5 months. All eggs seem rather small for their breeds. At first I figured it was due to the early age of laying (especially for our Orpington), but knowing Speckled Sussex hens usually lay around 5 months, and the eggs haven't gotten any bigger, I'm starting to worry. The feed we've been giving them is supposed to help with egg production, but it doesn't seem to be doing much by way of size (the egg shells have definitely been strengthened, though).
Below are pictures of either our RIR's or our Orpington's egg (left) and a regular sized store-bought egg (right).
They're all about the same size. Does anyone think this is too small? If so, could it just be due to the age or is there something else? They all seem pretty healthy, so I can't figure out why they're so small!
