Chicken has open wound, yellow skin!!! *graphic picture* please help

If you are hearing air then she may have a punctured air sac. In that case I would not flush the wound as you could get it in the air sac. Use the veterycin spray to clean as well as you can and trim any feathers away from the wound to help keep it clean. Since you don't have a vet option, I would suggest you do a round of amoxicillin since you have a possible air sac rupture. If you can prevent infection, she may have a chance.

This video explains the respiratory system very well and you can see where the air sacs are located:

If air is escaping through the wound when she breathes her air sac has been ruptured. I'm not sure if that will heal itself but I would be loath to irrigate the wound in case fluid leaks into the air sac. I would maybe carefully clean the wound with a mild iodine solution.... Betadine or similar using Q-tips and apply the wound spray to the surface and leave it open. I have no experience of ruptured air sacs. Chickens have several of them placed throughout their bodies as well as lungs. I believe she can survive this but veterinary care would be best.

@casportpony ... Kathy do you have any experience with ruptured air sacs.

I'm wondering if something like a well sterilised balloon can be inserted into the wound hole and inflated slightly to seal it and give the air sac a chance to heal as it is unlikely to heal when air is constantly being released through the hole.

Oh no, I agree that her wound is more serious than I thought. You may want to get some plain neosporin (or vaseline) ointment and gauze 4x4, and apply the ointment in a gob to the gauze, and press it onto the wound to seal it. That can seal the wound for you to be able to secure that to her back with something stretchy such as panty hose or similar that can go around her. Than I would try to get her to a vet to get her stitched up. I have doubts that she will make it without vet care, but I have never treated a leaking air sac. The air sacs are how a chicken breathes in and pulls air throughout her body. Anything put into that wound can travel to the rest of the body, so that is why risk of infection can be so great. Antibiotics would be hood. Feed stores do sell procaine penicillin G in the refrigerated medicines under several brand names. With a 3 ml syringe with a 20 gauge short needle, you can give 1/4 ml once a day for 4-5 days of penicillin.

These stretch net bandages are sold at most pharmacies. Panty hose can be cut similarly to fit around her occlusive wound dressing with leg openings to hold it in place.
