Chicken impaled lower bill on hook, just found her hanging

Am glad you found a vet that would see her. Sincerely hope she makes a full recovery. Am very curious about the hook, if you can post a picture I'd love to see it, to see what she managed to catch herself on, it does sound like a freak accident. Hope you will update us on her progress.

You are absolutely right, I’m an RN too (but human doesn’t always translate well to animal)! She is going to get a lot of fluid under the skin, some ongoing pain killers, antibiotics for the wound, and they recommended I pull another chicken out of the coop to stay with her for the 3-4 days she can’t go back- of course, that opens up a whole slew of other issues. They told me her chances wouldn’t have been good staying at home because the side of her face is swelling up from the trauma and she can’t move her beak enough to drink well. I’m glad they are treating her so well and I can hear her raising hell in the back while they’re giving her the fluid! They emphasized again and again that she really needed to have pain medicine to heal-

I was thinking about you and your girl while I was working my 11hr shift today, glad to hear she got medical attention. I've taken the same chicken to the vet twice just to find out she was fine! LOL. Poor girl, hope she recovers quickly. Chickens are surprisingly tough. I would've freaked out to see one of my girls hanging like that, poor baby. Keep us updated, please

You’d be surprised what crying hysterically and telling the vet offices how she was hanging will FINALLY get someone to see you. And through them I now have a full time vet for all of them so I guess Brenda’s accident ended up being for some good!

This is the horrible hook she was impales on. If you can see the cage in the background, it’s the standard hook they supply, attached to a chain, so you can hang it for seed cakes. She must have been swinging the cage around and the hook came free from where it was tucked in the cage (we use suspension lines for the main support as they seem safer and everyone loves how far they can make them swing). I can’t understand why or how it happened but I may never recover from the sight. If you use these, please either crunch the hooks so there’s no opening or just dispose of them and use the tiny end link to support the chain. Who could have imagined?

I can’t understand why or how it happened but I may never recover from the sight.

I'll bet...I know pic would have been impossible, but sure would have liked to see one.
Not sure how the hook came loose but was still suspended enough to hold bird from it.
Anyway glad she recovering.
