Oh my goodness they are hilarious! Love your description that they are like chickens on crack.

In the coop...are those lavender guineas? I have a thing for lavender, lilac and self blue colors! Pretty.

Loved those videos. Not a vegetarian myself, but don't think I'd want to raise Guineas for meat anyway, would not mind having a few around. Not sure how I would keep them from running (flying) off to live in the woods outback. If I let my hens range they head off to the woods, (lost a young white roo to a hawk back there). My dear daughter-in-law lives next door and she also has chickens. She lets them range and has lost a couple to a hawk, but now has those Giant Jersey Black hens and a HUGE Black JG rooster to keep an eye on his girls. How do Guineas fare against Red Tail Hawks? That might be a problem. An even bigger problem for me is the DW

- doesn't care so much for some of my curious hobbies. She approves of a few hens, but just put her foot down when I asked about getting 4 ducklings to raise. I might have to secretly order some Guinea eggs to hatch.

I have heard repeatedly that ducks are the finest form of comedy! Would it be "awful" to give her some for Mother's Day? Or her birthday? I am such an enabler. I don't know what I would do if my DH said no to me.

Yes, I had lavender, white, pearl and one chocolatey colored one. Not sure where that one came from!!

As for how they fare against hawks.. We had a hawk attack and they did get two chickens, but didn't manage to get any of the guineas. They are so frantic, it's amazing anyone wants to attack them.

If you keep them cooped up for a while, they are just like chickens as far as homing ability- mine returned to the coop each night and did not fly off, HOWEVER they decided that my front lawn was a terrific place to hang out. I have all my acreage in the BACK of my property - the front lawn is right across the street from lots of neighbors.. And they would just sit there and holler non stop starting as soon as the coop door opened. Good way to piss off a neighbor you hate!! Plus there were just too many of them - we tried separating them from the chickens and they hated THAT more, which led to more hollering.

They are awesomely funny birds tho. Ours would follow us everywhere (announcing our presence, of course) and would run up to the car when I got home.

Oh, and there are a few baby chicks in with the guineas in the 'keepaway' video - they are the ones slowly lumbering around. Hahahha..

Oh, they are adorable! I have a Cayuga pair, Thelma and Louie, who are my stealth Ninja night-time patrol ducks. I bought them as ducklings from the feed store a year ago this month. Thelma lays lovely big eggs in nice nests she builds, but doesn't set on them. (Yet.)

I recently hatched four call ducks, two whites and two greys. Louie is fascinated with them and "protects" them from the chickens (who really don't care about the ducks at all but Louie isn't taking any chances). When they get into the kiddie pool, Louie stands guard and watches them, lovingly. He shows them how and where to dabble and bill in the mud by the kiddie pool.

Ducks are ALWAYS happy. They make me smile and laugh all the time. The tail waggle is such a happy ducky gesture. And when they bob their heads at each other it's a hoot. They stand up and flap and flap and flap their wings like glorying in the day. When it rains, they are in heaven.

Well now I REALLY can't wait for my ducky orders! After a description like you gave...a few weeks seems like forever!

Hmmmm! Ducks AND Guineas?

Maybe we can compromise and I can get an order for more chicks. Can't seem to get eggs as fast as people just keep dropping in and buying them. I know she probably gets tired of hearing me whine.
