My name is kaybats and I am chick addicted. Haven't read all your stories yet, but believe me I will. Good to know there are others like me out there
Here's my story:
All I wanted was fresh eggs. That's it. That's all. Farmer across the street brought some over one day and I was hooked. Can't even bear the thought of a "store bought" even passing my lips.
So it was decided. I waited patiently for chick days in March at Orscheln. Got 6 RIR chicks. Two turned out to be roos and that's when I found BYC. It seems 4 girls and 2 boys is not a good idea....and I have found this out first hand just recently.
Sadly, I lost one of my girls to a predator
I cried for days. Now it's THREE to 2! Obviously, need more girls. Did NOT want to sell or (gasp!) Eat one of the boys. I was pretty bummed out at the thought of having to wait til next March or maybe til my hens started laying to get more chicks! (A first class newbie, huh?)
I found out there is a hatchery only about 30 miles away!!
Got me some buff orpingtons! And just for good measure, 2 one day old ducklings! I couldn't resist...they were just too cute. As the week wore on, I thought, OK, got the reds, now some golden orps...I REALLY want some white ones too! Needless to say, I was back at the hatchery that Friday to get my white rocks. And again, just for good measure, two more ducklings!
I have the hatchery's catalog and I not ashamed to admit that my sharpie has gone dry putting stars next to all the ones on my wishlist! I'm still not sure how chicken math works, but I think I might have a pretty good equation coming on.
By the way, I am currently studying "Chickenese". I'm pretty confident I will be fluent by the time the BO's and WR's move into the coop!
