Dogs and cats technically weren’t domesticated as pets either- cats were fed because they controlled pest animals and dogs were used for hunting and protection.

My hubby and I watch the Walking Dead and have talked about this before. A good dog we wouldn't eat because it would be more valuable to us alive we think. Cats, rats, squirrels, pretty much anything else would be fair game. I would try to not eat my chickens for as long as possible, just because I would want the eggs. But I don't have a rooster so when they stop laying, they would get eaten. I would even eat turtle or fish(I HATE fish). Like someone else said, bear is gamey and greasy but fair game too. You'd be surprised what you would eat to live. And for those people that think meat just comes from the grocery store, well, let's be real, they won't last

I think a lot of the issue with eating dogs and cats is that in countries where there’s famine, people will steal the beloved pets of others in order to sell for a few quick bucks to people who are desperate and will eat anything.

I read recently that a few months ago that China rounded up pets from the middle class in cities due to food shortages, and the people were told that commoners should be raising pigs on their porch and dogs are for the rich. When you see dogs being saved from the food trade, it’s obvious that many were cherished pets that were taken from their owners. I recently read a go fund me for rescuing meat trade dogs, and they were mostly a bunch of sad looking, but otherwise healthy golden retrievers. Plus, I think most of us agree that commercial poultry farms are terrible in general, can you imagine what that industry is like in third world countries without regulations, imagine that what we consider terrible puppy mills are at least loosely regulated, and what dog meat farms look like.
