Now right now. I'm having another chicky emergency. I don't know if I'm just being overprotective or if these girls just have a lot of problems! It's Rangi this time, though.

Okay, here's what's up. Rangi is sneezing, loudly and violently. There was some clear discharge with some of her sneezes, but that seems to have passed. She also is tired and has her tail down. The most evident change in behavior is that she is not trying to get out of the brooder. I had the wall down for them to come out and she just stood there. Everyone else is fine, even Roha, who was sick last week but seems to have gotten over it.


Almost everything I'm finding when searching for these symptoms doesn't match up to what I'm seeing and requires some sort of exposure to the outside world. I have not taken these babies out of my room since they arrived. I have Lysol wipes at the door to my room and everyone has been made to wash their hands, feet, and clothing with one before coming in to see the babies. My room is locked when I am not in it, so I know no one could have slipped past this step and gotten to the babies.


The only other thing mentioned was dust causing them to sneeze. Now, when I came in the room just now, Rangi was just fine and trying her darndest to fly out as usual. Then, I picked her up and took her over to my window sill--which, admittedly, is very dusty. She played around over there for a little while, and then I put her back in the brooder to refill the chick feeder. The feed, I noticed, was especially powdery--or dusty, if you will. And finally, I wanted to set them loose on the floor without having to worry about poop cleanup, so I got some newspaper that has been in the drawer under my bed for years now (there have always been animals in my room, so newspaper is frequently used) and, you guessed it, it was covered in dust. My assumption at this point is that during one of these three events, nosy little Rangi got in there and inhaled some dust.


So I'm not going to do anything just yet and go with the hopes that she sneezes it out. She is still drowsy, though she is sneezing a little less than she was at first (but still quite violently!), so here's hoping it passes.
